Flooding in Chennai • The Indian coastal city of Chennai saw its heaviest rainfall in more

than 100 years. On Dec. 1, 2015, the government released water into several rivers to prevent dams from breaking. Excess water overflowed from the already-taxed rivers, causing severe flooding.

  • The floods killed more than 250 people and forced thousands to

evacuate submerged homes and schools.

• Transportation was shut down; Chennai Airport was closed, as were the railway station and most roadways.  

• Power was shut down throughout the city of 4.8 million people. Most landline communication was lost and cellular communication was limited.
