Introduction

• Adventure in the Himalayas, though a way of life for the native, was laid bare principally by the British and other European explorers.

• The boom leading to the present scenario of adventure tourism in Uttarakhand is hardly a couple of decades old.

Impacts of Climate Change

Wildlife•Fewer sightings.

•Getting scrunched between two extreme alpine weather

conditions as winters become cooler and summers become

hotter.

Energy Consumption and Resource Utilization•Wood and coal used for heating water, air quality around

the campsite suffers; temperature rise.

•Water scarcity.

Environment•Stormy conditions observed around April (previously May).

•Vegetation patterns changing.

Business Numbers

• Rafting is allowed between September- June.

• There is no air conditioning at the campsites.

• We consider only the first half of the year.

Coping Up

• Water based activities are conducted during the afternoons.

• Conferences/ seminars etc. are conducted indoors.

• Heavy tree plantation to mitigate the dust due to the ongoing construction of the Badrinath highway (incidentally, bird watching came up as an interesting by product).

Tourist Education

• Briefings with emphasis upon recycling and reusing.

• Tree plantation.

• Environment modules during summer camps and school trips.

Evolution of Tours

• Concepts of geotourism and voluntourism to be brought out of their academic abstractions.

• Before any activity, the tourist has to be made aware of the changes he/ she would cause.
