Simplified Strategies provides free alphabet charts in English and Spanish. The ‘Easy Guide: Alphabet Chart’ provides teachers with an alphabet chart that can be used as a tool to increase alphabet knowledge. Students may be encouraged to use this chart in a number of ways. For example, when singing the alphabet song, encourage students to follow along on individual alphabet charts, pointing at the letters while singing at a slow pace. Also, students can be encouraged to refer to their alphabet charts as they are beginning to attempt to write their own messages. The pictures that go with each letter provide helpful cues when students are learning beginning letter/sound relationships. Students can also use the alphabet chart with dotted lines to cut out and create their own memory games. Alphabet knowledge is a known predictor of progress in reading instruction. Students should typically recognize almost all letters by name, name most letters and name and recognize some letter sounds before entering kindergarten. Frequent, repeated exposure to each letter in meaningful and playful contexts (not drilling) helps students learn about the alphabet. For teachers As a teacher, your unique understanding of your student abilities, modes of learning, and interests will allow you to decide the most effective way to use the alphabet chart as a learning tool. If you are using the alphabet chart in the classroom, print out a copy of the ‘Easy Guide: Alphabet Chart’ for families to share with families to use at home.
