Many of his novels involve elements of technology that were fantastic for the day but later became commonplace. He is the second most translated author in the world (after Agatha Christie).[Some of his books have also been made into live-action and animated films and television shows. Verne is often referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction", a title sometimes shared with Hugo Gernsback and H. G. Wells.

This is a classic adventure novel first published in 1873. Phileas Fogg and the other members of his club make a bet that Fogg can travel around the world in 80 days. Fogg leaves on his journey with his valet, Passepartout. From London, they travel to Egypt, where they are watched by Fix, a Scotland Yard detective, who mistakes Fogg for a bank robber from London. Since he wants to arrest Fogg, Fix follows Fogg and Passepartout on board a ship to Bombay. From Bombay, they travel to Calcutta. Along the way, they come across a funeral procession in which a young Indian widow, Aouda, is to die on the funeral fire along with her dead husband. After rescuing her, they continue on their journey and soon reach Hong Kong.

SYNOPSIS

In Hong Kong, Fix confides in Passepartout, who does not believe him. To stop Passepartout from informing Fogg, Fix gets Passepartout drunk and drugs him but Passepartout still manages to catch the steamer to Yokohama, but without Fogg. Fogg and Aouda manage to reach Yokohama on their own and look for Passepartout. They find him in the circus, trying to earn a fare for his journey home. The four then sail to San Francisco, then travel to New York, and finally to Liverpool, encountering a number of obstacles along the way. Once they are back in Britain, Fix arrests Fogg but soon realises his mistake when he finds out that the actual bank robber has already been caught. However, Fogg misses the train and returns to London five minutes late, thinking that he has lost the bet.

The next day, Aouda tells Fogg that she loves him and he agrees to marry her. Passepartout soon discovers that they had mistaken about the date, and that they had actually arrived early. Fogg immediately goes to his Club and arrives in time to win the bet. Fogg marries Aouda.

The story is set in various locations around the world, from London to Egypt, India, Hong Kong, China, the United States and finally back to London. The setting is in the late nineteenth century.

SETTING

The main theme of the story is about a man who is challenged to accomplish a feat and he manages to do so. The feat is about being able to travel around the world within 80 days. Fogg is very excited to take up this challenge, because he believes that by being precise and efficient enough, one can make this possible. Despite the many obstacles he faces, he does not giv up. Another theme is that Fogg finds the love of his life because of this trip- the love story between Fogg and Aouda. He saves Aouda from danger and takes her along with them on their journey because he hopes to deliver her safely to her relative, he takes her back to London, whre he admits to be in love with her and finally marries her.

THEMES

The story is told in the third person point of view.

POINT OF VIEW

Phileas FoggHe is the hero in the novel. He is a rich English nobleman and a bachelor who lives alone in London. He is an intelligent, pleasant and well-mannered man who should be done. He can be described as perfectionist or very disciplined. He is a member of prestigious club in London, called the Reform Club. He loves adventure and is also courageous as he helps save Aouda from death. He is portryed as rational, clam, generous and self-controlled person.

MAIN CHARACTER

Jean PassepartoutHe is a young French man who comes to work as a valet for Fogg. He is an honest man and is very loyal to Fogg and is willing to help Fogg in whatever way he can, even risking his life for his master.

CHARACTER

Detective FixHe is a Scotland Yard detective who mistakes Fogg for a bank robber. Since he is unable to arrest Fogg along the way, he follows Fogg and Passepartout on their journey. He is very dedicated to his job and is a persistent man.

CHARACTER

Aouda She is a young Indian princess who is a widow and whom Fogg and Passepartout rescue from being sacrificed on a funeral fire. She travels back to London with them. Although Fogg thinks that he has become a poor man, she confesses to being in love with him and wants to marry him.

CHARACTER

A moral value in the story is that if we are persistent in what we want, we can accomplish what we set out to do. In the story, Phileas Fogg accepts the challenge to go around the world in 80 days and manages to accomplish this feat. Other moral values in the novel are loyalty and trusting another person. This can be seen in Passepartout’s behaviour towards his master. Despite hearing from Fix that Fogg might be a bank robber, Passepartout does not give up being loyal to his master. He even risks his life to save Aouda because his master wanted him to do so.
