Who am I? My name is Kimberley Major (formerly Eastall). I am a 25 year old mother of two from Toowoomba.I love to design and build things (furniture, toys etc), and I love to explore so I am always travelling to weird and wonderful places. I am always learning something new.

Why am I studying a Diploma of Engineering and Spatial Science? In 2014 I applied for a position at Ergon as an Electro technology Electrician. I was shocked to pass the first round (maths test) as I hadn’t studied maths in a long time. I then proceeded to pass each stage with ease until the final interview. I was second in line for the position. An apprenticeship as an Electrician is highly sort after, an apprenticeship with a major company is even more sort after so I was proud of myself and inspired. I am 25, a female and a mother. It is near impossible to get any job in this day and age let alone an apprenticeship so I dug my heels in and decided to go again. 12 months of studying would take months of an Associates degree (offered through Ergon) and will hopefully help me pass that final stage and secure a position for 2016.

Digital technology Digital technology is everywhere. At home I use a multitude of digital technology products from NBN internet, to modems, television, computers, iPhone, home phone, Wii, Tbox and dvd player. In a typical day I wake up to digital technology as the alarm on my phone goes off, I quickly check Facebook and turn the tv on. My children watch a kids show while I prepare breakfast. We then hope in our car and off to Day care. At day care they use a range of digital technologies with interactive whiteboards and email newsletters. I head home to begin study on my computer. I will usually link my laptop and my computer so I can access both screens at once. I will then use my iPhone to make phone calls and retrieve emails throughout the day. After I finish study I head back to day care to pick up the children, home to cook dinner and then after the kids are in bed I will use the Tbox to watch pre-recorded shows.

Digital Citizens in 2015 To be a digital citizen in 2015 you need to be up to date with latest technology. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need the newest iphone but you will need to ensure your technology device has the latest software so it is compatible with other devices. I believe that digital technology is all about progression and moving forward. You need to be able to adapt and continually learn.

What would I like to ask? What is the meaning of life? In all seriousness I would like to know whether I am doing ok. It may seem like a trivial question but after unsuccessful attempts at prior study I sometimes feel discouraged. I am also a hands on learner so I can find assessment tasks tedious. I don’t expect to ace the course, just as long as I do ok.

What challenged me about Assignment 1?I found the assignment as a whole challenging. Not the content or the questions but the time management. This week we have a public holiday which means one less day to study. For most this wouldn’t be an issue, more likely to be considered a blessing but a public holiday means one less day of day care which provides me with 10 hours study time (1 unit) I also had appointments on Tuesday which meant I lost half a day there. It has meant finding time where I can to study and aiming to make it through the week with all tasks completed.
