Personal Statement

I have grown up in a small farming community in northeast Colorado, all my life I have strived to be able to leave this small town and venture out into the unknown to pursue anything and everything I wanted to. While attending high school I found myself not caring too much about my scholastic career and I never even thought about going to college, my GPA in high school was not too high, I would say about a 2.95 was the most I cared about school. During my junior year of high school I made a decision that I still regret to this day, I dropped out of high school and decided getting my GED would be a better idea, I am glad my mother was on my case the whole time when I made that decision, if it wasn’t for that woman I wouldn’t be where I am today. In May 2005 I graduated high school and not sure what I wanted to do with my life I attended the local community college, this is where I started to blossom and focus a great deal of my life and my time to furthering my education. While attending college I worked a full time job and started to live on my own but never leaving the small town I grew up in. I took many general classes in this college because I did not know what I wanted to focus on, career wise. It wasn’t until my second year at this college that I started taking sociology, psychology, adult and child development classes that I realized what I am truly interested in studying and furthering my education in, the wonderful field of psychology. Because I was doing so much it took me much longer than expected to finish with my associates degree, in August of 2009 I did graduate from Morgan Community College with my associates of arts degree, I had a 3.45 GPA and was very proud of myself, this was a huge accomplishment from when I first started my scholastic journey. Right after I graduated from MCC I started searching for a school that was close to home but out of town and that specialized in the field I wanted to study, after a month I found the school I wanted to attend and quickly applied to the online version. I started attending Argosy University online in September 2009 and excelled at every class I was in. Also in 2009 I was nominated for the National society of collegiate scholars and was accepted, I am still a member of that group today. I am currently still attending Argosy University on campus and am on my last semester before graduation. Attending this University has been the best decision I have made, I will be receiving my Bachelors degree in psychology in August 2011 and am currently sitting at a 3.78 GPA.While attending college I have done a variety of volunteer work to gain more experience in the field of psychology, I have volunteered at my local centennial mental health and assisted with filling documents and patient files. I have also volunteered at the Greeley behavioral health center which is in association with the Banner health hospital. Of the six months that I had volunteered at the Behavioral health center I sat in on youth counseling sessions and saw the appropriate ways to reach someone through pure conversation, after volunteering here I have been hooked on helping people talk through their issues. Because of my experience scholarly and personally I realize I want to be someone people can turn to, to seek advice from, or just a shoulder to cry on. I have strong listening and communication skills and this is a major attribute to the field of psychology. I have grown so much over the years and am starting to see who I am and what my goals are for myself and I believe that if I continue on with my education I can reach all of my goals that I have planned for and make myself proud.

Reflection

During my four years of education obtaining my Bachelors degree in psychology I have realized a few important aspects about myself. This has been a long and strenuous journey but well worth it, during this time I have realized some strengths and weaknesses when it comes to my scholastic career. I have written many research papers during my four years of secondary education and I believe my weaknesses are APA formatting, using too many quotations, and sentence formatting. I will be striving to adjust these mistakes in the future of my writings to make them that much better. I feel that I have learned great techniques and have access to great resources’ in order to format my writings and I will be utilizing them continuously throughout the rest of my career. Some strength’s I believe I have obtained during this scholastic career are being able to have a nice flowing research paper that is well organized and easily understandable. I have also developed great research techniques and being able to distinguish a reliable resource from a non-reliable resource. During my time at Argosy University I have obtained an invitation to become part of the National Association of Collegiate Scholars during my online programs, this was a very great achievement for me and made me strive ever harder to complete this degree.

My Future in Learning

Being a lifelong learner has always been a goal in my life and now I can finally say that I have, in fact, obtained that goal and I have myself to thank for it. The motivation and dedication that I have had for the past four years has been a major asset for me and that is what has helped me finish my education. Even though I have obtained my bachelors degree and it feels great, this is not the end of my scholastic career, I plan to continue my education and start attending Certified addictions counselor (CAC) courses so I can obtain a certification. After I have obtained this I would like to continue on in a master’s program with an emphasis in criminal psychology. This has been a very amazing journey for me and I have learned a lot about myself while learning about different aspects of psychology, I have also realized that psychology is the career that I want to dedicate my life to because of the way it affects people lives and all of the different resources we have at our fingertips to help people when they need someone to talk to or if they are at their breaking point. I have learned so much over the past four years and there is no way that I can stop learning about this career field.
