COMBINING FORM: DERMAT/ODermat/o refers to the skinWe can combine dermat/o with numerous prefixes and suffixes to create word meaning.An example is the word: dermatitis The suffix itis means inflammation, therefore:Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin. 4. COMBINING FORM: MELAN/O Melan/o means black. We can combine melan/o with the suffix cyte, whichmeans cell. We have created the word melanocyte, which means black cell. 5. SUFFIX: -DERMA The suffix derma also refers to the skin. By adding derma tothe end of a word, we can create meaning. By adding the combining form leuk/o, which means white, we can create the word leukoderma, meaning white skin. 6. COMBINING FORM: ONYCH/O The combining form onych/o refers to the nails. We can combine onych/o with the suffix phagia, meaning to eat/swallow, to create the term Onychophagia, which means nail- biting. Now that youre getting the hang of this, lets try another one: Another word we can create with the combining form onych/o is onychomalacia, which means softening of the nail.
