Y2 Deadlines Calendar September  • Review the application process with your counselor.

Meet all deadlines. • Register for SAT Reasoning Test and/or ACT, if

appropriate.• Schedule follow-up appointment(s) with your CTO

Year Two Year CalendarSeptember• Visit selected college campuses, if possible.• Start the “Common Application” and/or Obtain

all applications for colleges on your short list. – EXCLUDING CUNY

• Apply to retake SAT/ACT as needed.• ONLY If applying Early Decision at a private

college, fill out the CSS Profile Financial Aid application online at www.collegeboard.com.

• If applying for “early action” or “early decision” meet all deadlines.

Early Action vs. Early DecisionDeadlines Typically 11/1 -

11/15Early Action (EA)• Application is usually due in November, student hears back

about acceptance before January. (You can apply to as many EA schools per student as you want)

• The decision is not binding.Early Decision (ED)• Student still applies early and college replies before the end

of the year but the agreement is binding. • You can ONLY APPLY TO ONE SCHOOL ED!• Applicants who are accepted from an Early Decision pool

have signed an agreement in their applications promising to enroll at that school if accepted. Usually a deposit is due with the notice of acceptance.

• Finish Common App

• Input draft lift in Naviance

• Assign their Teacher Recommenders and CTO Advisor via Common App: submit recommendation requests to two teachers

• Personal Statement: finish personal statements (make an appointment with CTO Advisor and writing center).

• Develop résumé, portfolio, CD/videotape, or other appropriate reflection of special talent, as advised by your counselor.

Review, Visit, Info Sessions, meet w. CTO advisor)

• Figure our HEOP Eligibility: If eligible, you will want to adjust your list to include some HEOP schools.

• Info Sessions: Meet with college representatives visiting BHSECQ to express interest and to obtain information.

• A.L.A.N.A. Visit Programs: apply to and attend ALANA programs

• Arrange for on or off campus interviews when offered.

recommenders of EA, ED, or POSSE applications (see deadline above).

December• Gather Documents for Financial Aid Applications• Test Scores: forward SAT and/or ACT scores to colleges

• CUNY Applications: choose 4 CUNY campuses you want to apply to and rank them in order of preference. – Submit the CUNY application on the CUNY website by

12/1/2014 – use BHSEC Instructions that will be givine out in November.

Financial Aid• All students seeking

financial aid must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

• Apply for PIN through FAFSA website, you MUST have a PIN to complete the FAFSA.

• Scholarships are a great way to get extra money for college.

• Be sure to search your potential colleges’ financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

• As always, meet all deadlines!

Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized Educational Loans

from the Federal Gov’t

Subsidized• Awarded on the basis

of financial need. You won't be charged any interest before you begin repaying the loan because the federal government subsidizes the interest during this time.

Unsubsidized• You will be charged

interest from the first disbursement until it is paid in full. The interest is capitalized, meaning that you pay interest on any interest that has already accrued.

will hold special group sessions on creating and writing unique resumes and entrance essays.

• Keep an eye out for the dates and times of these groups!

Letters of Recommendation

• For Common App Schools – you must “assign” them this week.

• For non-common app schools, you must give them stamped, address envelopes

• Be Timely and Respectful• Give them a filled out “Request Form”• Counselor Letter- written by CTO Adviser• 2-3 From Teaching Faculty

– Major academic disciplines

BHSEC students and applying Freshman or Transfer

• CUNY (City University of New York) BHSEC students apply as TRANSFERs at these schools.

– They will not look at SAT scores and they only want to see your college gpa because of this.

– Students MUST apply as Transfers

• Almost all SUNYs (State University of New York) and most private schools – students apply as freshman and then work to transfer in their credits.

• NOTE: Some private schools are encouraging our students to apply as transfers. Talk with CTO Adviser if you are interested in applying to a school as a transfer.

• Increasing Selectivity for All apps, especially Transfers:

• Baruch – Average Transfer G.P.A = 3.33• Hunter – 3.14• Brooklyn – 2.88
