Exhibition

◦Reviews:

◦Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian - "Barnard's storytelling is heartfelt and passionate, fluent and supremely confident and this is a heart-wrenching movie with some stunning set pieces.“

◦Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent -"The Selfish Giant will have a very long shelf life and will be watched for years to come. Barnard's updating of Wilde is certainly one of the strongest films in what is shaping up as a vintage year for British cinema."

◦Success: It was voted British film of the year by the London Critics' Circle, won best film at the South Bank Awards and took the Europa Cinemas Label award at the Cannes Film Festival. Conner Chapman and Shaun Thomas(stars in the film), who were aged 12 and 15 respectively when they shot the film, shared the best newcomer prize at the London Film Festival. To add the Bafta for outstanding British film to that list.

Exhibition ◦ Box Office: Oldboy grossed $850,000 in its first five days. It opened in 17th place at the box office,

and so far has received a worldwide gross of $4,861,022, making it a box office bomb.

◦On opening weekend the film was shown in 583 theatres in America however the demand for the film wasn’t shown and therefore the film showings was cut to 21 by week 5.

◦Marketing dispute - The film's advertising agency was also accused of taking advantage of the creative artist, Juan Luis Garcia, who created posters for the film. According to an open letter posted by Garcia on his official website, the agency was asking him to work for too low of an offer, saying that the "exposure" would be more important. Garcia claims the posters were used and imitated for promotion of the film without paying compensation or credit to the artist. Spike Lee responded on his Twitter account saying: "I Never Heard Of This Guy Juan Luis Garcia, If He Has A Beef It's Not With Me. I Did Not Hire Him, Do Not Know Him. Cheap Trick Writing To Me. YO". He also addressed this further on Instagram, "Why Should I Pay Someone Who I Never Met Nor Had Any Contact With Ever? He Never Made Any Deal With Me. Why Don’t You Pay Me For Your Stupid Text On Thanksgiving Day?".
