Chrome Apps
• A Chrome App is an application or program that runs in the Chrome browser that takes you to a website.
• There is user interaction within the app.
• Examples include games, photo editors, audio recorders, concept map making, and video recorders and players.

Finding Chrome Apps • Apps appear as full icons in the Chrome Web
Store.
• In the Chrome Web Store, you can search by
Name, Type, Category, or all three.
The Chrome Web Store is located at
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/

Installing Chrome Apps 1. Visit the Chrome Web Store.
2. Find an app you want to install.
3. Click the app.
4. On the app’s detail page, you’ll see one of the following buttons:
– Add to Chrome or Free. This button means the app is free.
– Buy for [price]. This button means the app costs money.
Sometimes, you'll also see a Try Now button. These apps
offer a free trial.
5. Click the button to install the app.

Chrome Extensions • A Chrome Extension enhances the user experience, adds
productivity to any website when using the Chrome
browser.
• Examples include URL shorteners, timers, screen captures
and readability aids.
• Extensions are located on the right side of the omnibox.
• They appear as puzzle piece icons in the Chrome Web
Store.

Installing Chrome Extensions 1. Visit the Chrome Web Store.
2. Find the extension you want to install.
3. Click Add to Chrome.
4. A dialog appears letting you know about the types of data that
the extension will be able to access.
5. Click Add to grant the extension access to the data described
and install the extension.
You’ll see its icon appear to the right of the address bar. To start
using it, just click the icon.

Chrome Smashing • Chrome Smashing is a lot like baking.
• It involves mixing 2 or more digital tools (chrome apps or
extensions) to create an outstanding learning product.
• When such products are created, critical thinking skills
come into play.

“While many apps slightly overlap in terms of
functionality, there tends to be a few black holes in
each app that require the use of another app to
complete the process. This leads us to App
Smashing. . . the process of using multiple apps in
conjunction with one another to complete a final task
or project.”

Group Activity 1. Get into groups by your favorite Chrome
or G Suite tool.
2. Choose a Superhero Name for your
group.
3. Create a sales pitch for the tool.
• Include name of the tool
• Include two different examples of how
it could be used in the classroom
(grade level, content area, etc.).
4. Each group will have 10 minutes to create
the sales pitch and then 2-3 minutes to
share.
