Cambridge English - Young Learners: Practise and Play by Katie Curbelo Cambridge English: Young Learners Exams are becoming increasingly popular in primary schools and academies in Spain. They are fun and a positive way of introducing exams to young children. Preparing for the exams can be fun too and this workshop demonstrates a variety of activities to prepare for each part of the reading/writing exams through games. The activities can be applied to general classroom use as well.

Starters Reading and Writing activities

Part 1: Yes /No vocabulary game with flash cards. Students vote holding up “Yes” or “No” cards

Part 2: Yes /No vocabulary game with big picture Students vote holding up “Yes” or “No” cards when teacher says a sentence.

Part 3 : Physical words. Students make the words in teams by each holding up an alphabet card and standing in the correct order.

Part 4: Riddle. Students make their own riddle about an animal by circling words and then copying out the entire riddle.It is big/ small.It is brown /black / grey.It lives in a jungle/ house /farm.It can swim /fly/ run.

Part 5 : Make the question. Students say or write the question to the answer the teacher gives about a picture drilling What colour...? How many....? etc

Movers Reading and Writing

Part 1 : Pasa Palabras holding flashcard pictures behind one student. The rest of his team gives him clues

Part 2 : Students write true or false sentences about a picture.

Part 3: Multiple choice activity. The students write the answer in teams and hold it up.

Part 4: “Bring me the picture card” The teacher hands out pictures of the words that fill the gaps. There are 3 of the same pictures for each gap. The first student to bring the right picture to the teacher wins a point for their team.

Part 5 : “Paraphrasing relay race”. The teacher puts two sets of cards, which have paraphrased sentences taken from a Movers reading comprehension, on two tables . The students have a relay race in two or three teams taking turns to get two sentences that mean the same thing.

Part 6: “Treasure Hunt multiple choice” The teacher writes Movers multiple choice gap fill sentences on the front of an envelope and puts the 3 possible answers inside. The envelopes are hidden around the room. One student from each team is told where to find the envelope and the first one to find it opens the envelope and chooses the correct word inside.

Flyers Reading and Writing

Part 1 : (See Movers Part 1 activity but with word flash cards, not pictures).

Part 2 : (See Movers Part 2 activity).

Part 3 “Match the expressions mingle game” Students are each given a card with an expression or a reply to the expression. They walk around the room saying their expressions until they find their partner.

Part 4 (See Movers Part 4 activity but with words, not pictures)

Part 5 (See Movers Part 5 activity)

Part 6 ( See Movers Part 6 activity)

Part 7 “Look before and after” The teacher brainstorms possible word that can follow the beginning of a sentenceeg: She drew a beautiful....... He bought a …............

The teacher then shows the ending for the sentence as well and students see how the word needed is more obvious

eg She drew a beautiful..............of her cat. He bought a …........ and put it on an envelope.
