Cash in the Michigan State Gazetteer and
Business Directory
Beginning in the 1887 edition
the village of Cash had a
listing in the directory, often
with a brief summary and list
of local businesses.
Directory listing in the 1889-1890 edition showing a growth in the size of
the community.
Comparison of the listings from 1893 and 1901 show a population decline
in effect. From 100 in 1891 to 50 in 1893 down to only 20 in the 1901
directory. Offset however by the expansion of listed businesses and
occupations in the 1901 edition.
The 1905 listing on the left is the last to include the post office in the
village, which was closed later that year. Following directories merely
descripted Cash as a “discontinued post office” like the example of the
right thru to the 1923 edition.
Maps from the 1906 Atlas of Sanilac County. Including
Watertown Township & property ownership in Cash, also
the location of the church and schoolhouse. Highlights
the importance of the Cash family to the region.
U.S. Census 1850
Port Huron census with
Edwin Cash listed as a
resident before acquiring
and moving to land in
section 35 of Watertown
Township.
U.S. Census 1870

and Codington families. As
well as the school teacher
Sophia Wilson.
Historic photographs of Cash from the Township’s website. Image of
the general store on the left is circa 1920, no known date for the aerial
view on the right.
