Catalonia is placed in the north – east of the Iberian Peninsula. Part of Catalonia is washed by the Mediterranean sea.

It´s formed by four regions: Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona and Lleida. Our village is inside Barcelona that it is the most industrialized of them.

The most important mountains are the “Pyrenees” where people practice lot of snow sports.

People also practice lot of adventure sports in the rivers as rafting.

In Barcelona we have some important mountains like Montserrat Mountains, where there is an important monastery.

It’s placed in a valley 289 m above the sea level. From our

village we can see Montserrat Mountains.

These are 2 of principal streets of our village: the Main street and New street, where the most important buildings and shops are.After a fire that happened in 1936 the old church of Sant Bartomeu of Vallbona was unusable for the work ship. In 1941 the church was rebuilded using the walls and the front of the old one.

The town has been related with public transports from the age . Its communication and the urban development have been realised with the ancient royal way that connected Barcelona with Lleida.

Our school has a total of 160 students from 3 to 12 years old. When it snows is when we enjoy most.

Through the Mediterranean Sea the Greek and Roman cultures arrive and they left us part of their culture , language , religion , laws and art.

After the 10 th century Catalan countries and feudalism were created. At this time the Romanesque and the word “Catalonia”appeared for the first time and the first texts in Catalan were found.

In the XIII century cities and the trade grew thanks to the conquests of Jaume I “ The Conqueror “ .

It is at this moment when the institutions of the Catalan Government are created.

In the 16th century Catalonia started to grow economically. But with the arrival of Bourbon in Spain, the Catalan institutions are abolished and some wars happen.

In the 18 th century the Industrial Revolution took place.This was also a new period of growth for the industries and cities. The Catalan language and culture gained importance thanks to two cultural movements: the “Renaixença”and Modernism.

In 1936 the Spanish Civil War begins. The General Franco’s victory in 1939 starts a long period of dictatorship that suppresses the Catalan autonomy. They are years of war and poverty.

After the general Franco’s death a new period of freedom started and the “Statute of Autonomy” was legal again.

The Generalitat is the institution through Catalan people manage their interests. The Generalitat is formed by the Parliament, the President and the Government.

GASTRONOMYGASTRONOMYTypical Catalan dishes are: Beans with Catalan sausage, bread with tomato, “ escudella ” a broth with meat and legumes, cannelloni and the Catalan cream.

Our folkloric dance is the Sardana . It is typical that in our town celebrations giants and carnival figures with oversized heads appear.

The “castellers” are people that make a very high tower supporting each other. In Catalonia there are many famous groups of “castellers” because of the human towers they are capable to make.

These are the Catalan regional costumes.

The boy’s one consists of:-A red and black hat called “barretina”.-a white shirt.-a wide red belt.-black trousers.-white stockings.-espadrilles.

The girl’s one consists of:-a fish-net to put up the hair.-a black velvet choker.-a white shirt.-a embroidery Kerchief over the shoulders.-a pattern skirt down to knees.-espadrilles.

ART

There are famous,Catalan artists as Salvador Dalí or Gaudí, the author of the “ Sagrada Familia “ ,“Güell Park” or “The Pedrera” among other works.

SANT JORDI SANT JORDI Sant Jordi is the patron saint of Catalonia. By this reasons , on the 23rd of April all the streets are full of stands with books and roses that people give each other as a symbol of friendship and love.
