A JOURNEY IN
LAPLAND
HISTORY TRACESIn 1809 Finland was separated
from Sweden and the people of
Haparanda and Tornio were
divided with a border for the first
time in history.Today the border still exists but only on paper. It’s so open that most people don’t even know where it is. The cities of Tornio and Haparanda work together closely. Many Finns still do their grocery shopping in Sweden, only compared to older times, it is nowadays legal.
The Aine Art Museum was born out of the love Eila and Veli Aine had for the arts. Over the decades they collected a wide range of works of art, and this led to the establisment of the Aine Art Foundation in 1974. The foundation and the city of Tornio signed an agreement in 1979, according to which the city of Tornio was to build proper premises for the art museum and maintain its activities. The foundation was to transfer the art collection to the museum. The Aine Art Museum was opened to the public in 1986.
