Your child is more than just a subject. The high school experience is so important for teenagers. It is where they find their passions, create lifelong friends, and begin to discover who they really are. In an environment where schools are creating more and more specialization, we are proud of the fact that Chapin High School believes that educating the whole child is more vital than ever. Here, you will find an Engineering student who presents as a finalist in the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium and travels to London to sing in our award-winning Chamber Choir. Or the All State wide receiver wading waist deep in a marsh to collect samples for an AP Biology project. Or a National Merit Finalist wearing a dress made out of red Solo® cups as a part of our Junk to Funk Fashion Show. At Chapin, your child can pursue any passion he or she may have and not sacrifice a thing. Academically, our standardized test scores, graduation rates, and English and math Proficiency scores make us the top open enrollment school in South Carolina. The education your child will receive will continue to be first rate, even in specialized areas of study like engineering, medicine and the arts. But our students do not only attend classes here. They live here.

Passions aren’t always found in the classroom. As a part of our whole child approach to education, students have a wide variety of extracurricular activities available at their fingertips. From volleyball to Student Government, from jazz band to National Honor Society, students can participate in a wide variety of clubs and organizations. If there is not a club to which a student feels connected, he or she can start one. Many of our clubs began this way. The Fishing Club, Lumberjack Club, Computer Science Club, and Love Green Club were all started from students who wanted to turn their passions into something tangible. Even our Rugby team started as a club, and now it has won a State Championship.

Since we are a community school, we are not limited to time spent on campus during “school hours.” Our relationships with businesses and organizations in the area run deep. We can facilitate student interests from job shadowing to volunteer opportunities to jobs. Our students have lives outside of the school, and those lives are right here in Chapin.

Page 5: CHS Brochure

Concentration, not specialization. Our Courses of Study allow students to easily follow a path that suits them, while keeping all of the benefits that Chapin High School provides, including the ability to change concentrations without missing a beat. We have simply packaged courses and “meaningful experiences” in a way that gives students the depth that specialization provides, with the breadth that comes with a school that embraces whole child education. Students can concentrate on Engineering at a school that has some of the top Math and Science test scores in South Carolina, while hanging out with friends at lunch and winning (another) National Championship in NJROTC. Or concentrate on 3D Art in our award-winning Fine Arts Department while participating in Student Government. Or work to solve YouTube’s $500 million loss as a part of a case study from Harvard Business School used in the Entrepreneurial Studies concentration, while playing softball wearing Chapin blue. Even if your interests change next year, your school will not.

Courses of Study

Each Course of Study is filled with enriching experiences that enhance the area of concentration chosen by our students. These meaningful experiences, or CLAW Experiences, are intended to provide our students the platform for exploring their passions. For example, in the Entrepreneurial Studies concentration, a Marketing Management student may create an advertising Campaign for a local Chapin business, while a Business Information Management student designs an app that serves as an interactive magazine for Chapin High School. A Convergent Communications student may call play-by-play for the Homecoming football game, while a Sports Medicine student may serve as an athletic trainer for our football team. A Performing Arts student may sing at the National Cathedral while an Engineering student builds a working trebuchet as a partnered class with the CATE Center. Collaboration, meaningful experiences, amazing portfolios and an intense learning environment are integrated into each Course of Study.

Entrepreneurial StudiesThe key to our Business program at Chapin High School is the focus on creation. Students are faced with authentic situations that require creative application of core concepts, helping them develop a unique portfolio that mixes left and right-brained sensibilities and skills. Every teacher in the Entrepreneurial Studies concentration brings real business experience. Prior to becoming teachers, they have worked as Art Directors and Copywriters in advertising agencies, Marketing Managers, Computer Programmers, Project Managers, Graphic Designers, and various other positions in the “business world” that allow them to be dialed- in to the real needs of our students.

Business majors’ coursework in business strategy, statistics, accounting, finance, and operations management gives them skills in quantitative analysis. Research, writing, and presentation assignments en-hance their ability to gather, analyze, and present information. Many projects are done in groups, so students learn to work cooperatively. This training is important to employers, a fact reflected in the com-petitive salary offers that business majors receive when they enter the job market.

Visual Arts

We are excited to offer our Visual Art students learning experi-ences unlike any other, both inside and outside of the classroom. During the Junior and Senior year, students have the opportunity to meet with college representatives and attend portfolio days at both in-state and out- of-state institutions. As a result, students gain insight and learn what awaits them on future career paths. Visual Art students will have the opportunity to travel with the de-partment for special events and gallery openings at the Columbia Museum of Art, along with various other galleries and museums throughout the state. In addition, students are provided opportuni-ties to be involved in hands-on art programs that reach across all core subjects at Chapin High School.

Visual Art is a fundamental part of the human experience. Visual Art Education is therefore a necessary endeavor to ensure that the whole child is being educated. This includes skill development, cognitive understanding, and aesthetic appreciation for all art forms. Our goal is to develop and refine the artistic skills of each student and to “define the standard” in all we do.

Performing ArtsChapin High School boasts one of the top Performing Arts programs in the state. Our Cho-ral Program consists of six choirs and has performed all across the country, including The Duke Chapel, The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the National Cathedral. The Chapin Band has also received countless awards and has partici-pated in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington DC, The London Parade, and the Pearl Harbor Parade, just to name a few. The Chapin Marching Band is on the cutting edge of outdoor pageantry. Members of the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra often work as guest artists, enhancing the performance skills of Chapin High School orchestra students. With a heavy emphasis on performance and production, students involved in the CHS Theater program enjoy frequent opportunities to participate in everything from improv to set building, from acting to directing—and everything in between.

The goal of the School of Convergent Communications is to, first and foremost, develop strong communications skills with the individual student through the written and spoken word. Civil discourse is critical to democracy. Our students will learn the art of meaningful dialogue - including the ability to listen and respond respectfully - whether they are face-to-face or on-line. Technology is utilized to deliver messaging from our school hallways to the community, locally and globally. Students are taught that just because we can send out a message, that does not always mean we should. They learn that digital citizenship requires responsibility and that the character displayed by an individual through media is of critical importance- it requires self-leadership.

NJROTCChapin’s NJROTC program has been instrumental in promoting numerous candidates to service academies, into ROTC scholar-ships and other, non-military scholarship programs. Our NJROTC leadership will leave “no stone unturned” to help or to assist a stu-dent fulfill his or her dreams to serve our country.

The enjoyment our students receive from participating in Chap-in’s NJROTC program has continuously ranked Chapin as the best and largest two-instructor school in South Carolina and the surrounding states. Not only did the NJROTC unit place first in the nation in 1999, they repeated this accomplishment in 2002, and just recently 2012. They were National Runner ups in 2001 and 2003, and State Champions in eleven of the sixteen years that the program has been operational.

Chapin Life

Different paths start from the same community. No two students are exactly the same. They are uniquely different in wonderful ways. Whether they are playing rugby at Life University in Marietta, Georgia, honing their leadership skills at the Citadel, pursuing their passions at Duke, or earning their degree from the USC Honors College, every student who walks through the halls of Chapin High School has the opportunity to start on their path with love, support and encouragement from a community of family members, teachers, friends and neighbors. They will face academic rigor, and they will be challenged. Those challenges, however, will be faced in an atmosphere that fosters creativity, nurtures curiosity, and prepares students for the road ahead. We are not just a school. We are Chapin.
