DEFINITION


“Civil society refers to the arena of uncoerced collective action around shared interests, purposes and values. Civil society commonly embraces a diversity of spaces, actors and institutional forms, varying in their degree of formality, autonomy and power. Civil societies are often populated by organizations such as registered charities, development non-governmental organizations, community groups, women's organizations, faith-based organizations, professional associations, trade unions, self-help groups, social movements, business associations, coalitions and advocacy groups”.

The London School of Economics Centre for Civil Society's working definition is illustrative

Government alone do not make democracy work. Private initiative is also essential , including a vital role for those institutions which are collectively described as “Civil Society”


The element of Civil Society was developed during 1980s in Europe by the political opposition . Later in1990s emergence of non government organization and New Social movement give it birth on global scale

It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.
