ANDS (Australian National Data Service) project- 2012-2013

− One single repository of research metadata, research data, published papers

− Maintain and manage data once

− Republish repurpose

− Official standards (RIF-CS, OAI-PMH, EAC-CPF)

− Maintain official identifiers for records and people

− Proper data curation and management of data

− Continue to contribute records to Research Data Australia

What is Research Data?

• Research collections (raw data, metadata, papers, reports, field notes, photographs, approval documentation, survey forms/data, etc)

• Current and previously completed research

• Funded research from various bodies, not just the NHMRC or ARC.

What have we collected so far?

1. Spreadsheet data

• Competitive balance (CB) comparisons indicated by the application of a new measure over results for Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL) matches from 1897 to 2012.

• Circumstances and results of football matches involving Brazil from 9 August 1993 to 31 December 2010.

2. Visual data

• AUSLAN audio-visual research data resource collection from the National Institute of Deaf Studies

• Edgley Audio Visual Collection. Michael Edgley International. Moscow Circus Acts.

3. Archived websites

• CHAF (Chinese Heritage of Australian Federation) website

• Medieval music database

Drivers for change

Why should researchers put data in the Research Online repository?

NHMRC revised policy on the dissemination of research findings

NHMRC requires that any publications arising from an NHMRC supported research project be deposited into an open access institutional repository within a twelve month period from the date of publication. [2012]

NHMRC therefore encourages researchers to consider the benefits of depositing their data and any publications arising from a research project in an appropriate subject and/or institutional repository wherever such a repository is available to the researcher(s). [2007]

ARC open access policy

The overarching aim of ARC’s Policy is to ensure that the findings of publicly funded research are made available to the wider public as soon as possible. Both the research community and the public gain from knowledge derived from ARC funded research, and both wish to derive maximum benefit from these outputs. [2013]

Drivers for change

National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research

Guidelines (research merit and integrity – p30):

To promote access to the benefits of research, such data should be collected, stored and accessible in such a way that they can be used in future research projects.

Types of data

National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research

non-identifiable data – p29

(Data which never been labelled with individual identifiers or from which identifiers have been permanently removed, and by means of which no specific individual can be identified)

Human research ethics – guidelines – La Trobe

Low risk data – p8

Negligible-risk studies that may be exempt from review include –

• research utilising existing collections of research data or records that contain only anonymous or fully de-identified data. Researchers must identify where the data is being held

Informed consent

• Informed consent should explicitly state that the data may be held in La Trobe’s Research Online repository

ANDS statement:

Researchers are expected to obtain informed consent for people to participate in research and for use of the information collected.

Researchers should:

• inform participants how research data will be stored, preserved and used in the long-term

• inform participants how confidentiality will be maintained, e.g. by anonymising data

• obtain informed consent, either written or verbal, for data sharing

Data questionnaire

• Questions asked before we add data

• Data curation (description, provenance, format, etc) process takes quite a while

• Standard questions used across institutions

• ReDBox software being used by La Trobe, Griffith, UWS, NewCastle, UniSA, Flinders, UTAS – being developed in conjunction with ANDS

Research data in the Research Online repository

• When should researchers put data into the store?

− When data has crossed the digital curation boundary

− When a project is finished

− When it is important to expose data (alongside publications)

− When external (no longer maintained) sites need to be migrated to a stable platform

− When data needs to be preserved and kept
