Remember-You use demonstrative adjectives to point out people or things that are nearby and farther away.

Esta jamaica está cerca.This hibiscus is close.

Esa jamaica está un poco más lejos.

Aquella jamaicaestá lejos de nosotros.

A demonstrative adjective always comes before the noun and agrees with it

in gender and number.

Estos jovenes están alegres.

These teens are happy.

Pero, aquella chica está preocupada.But that girl (over there) is worried.

Demonstrative adjectives can be used as pronouns to replace nouns.To distinguish them from demonstrative adjectives, they have a

written accent mark.

To refer to an idea, or something that has not been identified, use the demonstrative pronouns ESTO, ESO, or AQUELLO.

None of them has an accent mark.

So remember…• Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out people or things that are nearby and farther away.

• A demonstrative adjective always comes before the noun and agrees with it in gender and in number. (ex. Este libro, esa chica)

• Demonstrative adjectives can also be used as PRONOUNS to replace nouns. To distinguish them from adjectives, they have a written accent mark. (ex. Éste, ésa, aquéllos)

• To refer to an idea or something that has not been identified, use the demonstrative pronouns ESTO, ESO, or AQUELLO. None of them has an accent mark.
