WHAT ARE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS?

Skills a person uses to interact with others

Also referred to as people skills or communication skills

Involves using other skills such as listening and tone of voice

WHEN ARE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS USED?

Most often in business settings to measure a person’s ability to operate within the organization.

In all relationships and occupational and social settings.

WHY DO I NEED INTERPERSONAL SKILLS?

Communicating respect for others will enable you to reduce conflict and increase participation or assistance in completing tasks.

Increases productivity in the organization

Enables the control of feeling that emerge in difficult situations and respond appropriately to them, without being overwhelmed with emotion.

Speech and language develop from birth until about four years old.

As each year progresses, sentences and speech become more elaborate and audible. Speech and language develop in the R-system and part of the Limbic System.

Social attachment occurs from birth to about four years old.

This is the foundation for relationships; we become attached to our family, friends, and lovers.

Once we develop out interpersonal skills, we are able to be more mature about separation and loss.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS RELEVANT TO SOCIAL SKILLS By the time a child turns three, their peer

social skills are fully developed. Peer social skills are a subdivision of

interpersonal skills because of the relations to others in the same age group.

Peer social skills are crucial because they form the foundation for all relationships.

Depending on how our skills develop, depends on what kinds of relationships we will have.

Depending on how peer social skills develop, the individual could end up being controlling and result in bulling others or being aggressive.

The individual may develop great social skills and have no issues meeting new people and further developing their interpersonal skills.

Or their skills may be underdeveloped and they may be shy and not socialize with many people or very often for that matter.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: FLOURISHING RELATIONSHIPS Friendships promote positive psychology Interpersonal skills help partners

enhance their existing and future personal relationships.

Healthy relationships are built on a secure foundation of attachments, which are developed by interpersonal skills.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: FOUNDATION FOR RELATIONSHIPS An association between two or more people

(interpersonal part) that ranges from fleeting to enduring.

People in relationships tend to influence each other, share their thoughts and feelings, and engage in activities together, so interpersonal skills is the sole foundations in order for these things to occur.

Close relationships are important for emotional wellbeing throughout the lifespan and they promote mental equilibrium.

Healthy and successful relationships are built on good interpersonal skills.

STEPS TO AN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP

Acquaintance: depends on first impressions, previous relationships, and physical proximity. You have to actually talk and get to know the other person!

Buildup: people begin to care and trust each other. Continuation: mutual commitment to a long term

friendship, romantic relationship, or marriage. Deterioration: not all relationships deteriorate, but if

the appropriate interpersonal skills aren’t present the relationship won’t last.

Termination: if the relationship deteriorates, the relationship will end. The relationship may end from other reasons such as death or for moral reasons such as adultery.

HOW DO I IMPROVE MY RELATIONSHIPS

Seek to understand your partner: knowing and being known

Enhance attributions for behaviors: giving the benefit of the doubt.

Accepting and respecting: focus on empathy and social skills

Maintain reciprocity: be active in participation for relationship enhancement.

Continuity in minding: be mindful of your partner and try to understand them better.

HOW DO I IMPROVE MY INTERPERSONAL SKILLS?

Don’t criticize yourself or others Be patient Learn to listen Be sensitive to others, this includes not

gossiping Have a sense of humor in the appropriate

situation Treat others with respect, as well as their

experience Praise an compliment others when they

deserve it. Treat strangers and your colleagues as friends

or even family members, not as subordinates

HOW DO I IMPROVE MY INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

(CONTINUED) When someone is telling a story, don’t

interrupt or try to upstage them with a story of your own

Look for solutions, and try to compromise to resolve the problem

When someone compliments you, don’t disagree or boast about it, simply say thank you with a smile and move on

Don’t complain constantly When you’re unhappy, try your best to act

happy anyways Learn to appreciate what you have and don’t

be self-absorbed.
