Formative Assessment- Assessment FOR Learning

- Occurs frequently and in an ongoing manner during instruction, while students are still gaining knowledge and practicing skills

- To monitor students’ progress toward achieving the … expectations, so that teachers can provide … feedback to students, scaffold next steps, and differentiate instruction and assessment in response to student needs

- Not used to determine marks or grades

- YCDSB Guidelines and Procedures for the Implementation of Ministry Policy: Growing Success Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools, 2011.

- Used by students … to monitor their own progress towards achieving their learning goals, make adjustments in their learning approaches, reflect on their learning, and set individual goals

Some General Advice:- Do get parents’ permission for children under 13 to use any digital tool

- Use as little student information as possible (numbers instead of names, first names and initials instead of last names, etc.)

- Read the terms of use and privacy before use and periodically check for changes

- Your students don’t have devices?

- Plickers or FlipQuiz (no student devices needed)

- Your class has only a few devices?

- Kahoot!, FlipQuiz, Quizes, (playing in team mode -- one device per team)

- You are an absolute beginner?

- Google forms (because its GAFE), Poll Everywhere

- You want a metacognitive activity?

- Poll Everywhere, Google forms, Padlet, Recap, Socrative Exit Ticket
