Raster Navigation Charts (RNC)

Produced by “scanning” the master components used in the production of the paper chart.

“Unintelligent” Data. Additional “header” data is supplied with

each chart, i.e. the Satellite position correction.

The UKHO product is known as Admiralty Raster Chart System (ARCS)

Raster Considerations

Advantages Easily recognised

format Quick and inexpensive

to produce

Disadvantages Cannot manipulate the

display Screen may appear

cluttered Cannot interrogate

information Over zooming may lead

to dangerous assumptions

Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) also known as Vector Charts

Produced by giving digital values to every point on the chart

Conform to IHO standard S57 Enables computer to identify the object, portray it in

the required form, place it in the correct position and provide information about its attributes

Intelligent data that can be interrogated UKHO ENC product is known as ENC - PILOT

Vector Considerations

Advantages Tailored display, which

permits layers of information to be displayed

Linked to much more information

Smart Data, as the user “zooms” in on a position, more detailed data can be displayed, i.e. more soundings

Disadvantages Slow and expensive to

produce What you see may not be

what you need
