2. My Site - FRIMI went to Forest Reserved Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) for my ENBE projectone. Saw a lot of big and tall trees around this area, so I chose this as my site.Besides all those big and tall tress, it has a small river and a lake beside thetrees and thats where I found my plant (water lily) and animal (arapaimagigas) I want to research on. 3. My Creature - Arapaima Gigas(Dragon Fish)Biogeographic Regions :NeotropicalHabitat Regions : TropicalfreshwaterTerrestrial Biomes : RainforestAquatic Biomes : Lakes and ponds, rivers andstreamsWetlands : SwampFamily: OsteoglossidaeGenus: ArapaimaArapaima gigas is the only generally-recognized species of the arapaima. In 1829, Swiss biologist LouisAgassiz produced a monograph ofanother proposed species found inthe Brazilian Amazon and namedArapaima agassizii in 1847. 8. My Creature - Arapaima Gigas(Dragon Fish)Anatomy and morphologyCan grow up to 2.5 meters (8.2 ft)The maximum-cited weight for thespecies is 200 kg(440 lbs). One of the mostsought after foodfish species inSouth America.Requires thearapaima to surfacefor air every 5 to 15minutes. 9. My Creature - Arapaima Gigas(DragonFish)Ecology The diet of the arapaima consists of fish, crustaceans, even small landanimals that walk near the shore. It is the top predator in such lakes during the low water season, when the lakesare isolated from the rivers and oxygen levels drop, rendering its prey lethargicand vulnerable. The fish is an air-breather, using its labyrinth organ, which is rich in bloodvessels and opens into the fishs mouth, an advantage in oxygen-deprived waterthat is often found in the Amazon River. 10. My Creature - Arapaima Gigas(Dragon Fish)Importance to humansThe tongue ofthis fish can killintestinal wormsby drying it andmixing it withguarana bark.Arapaimas bonytongue is often usedto scrape cylindersof dried guarana,an ingredient insome beveragesThe bony scalescan be used asnail files. In the Amazon region, the locals often saltand dry the meat, andcan be stored for along time withoutrotting. 11. My Plant - Water LilyWater Lily (Flower)A waterlily flower hasnumerous petals thatopen to reveal the malesex organs (stamens) thatsurround the centralfemale organ (pistil) thatcontains one or moreovaries.RootsWater lilies havespreading rhizomes androots that anchor theplant deep in the mud ofstill, fresh surface water. The roots take upnutrients, as well as smallreserves of water.Lily PadsWater lilies spread toaccommodate the areathey are growing in,filling the surface of thewater with lily pads. Lilypad growth continuesthroughout the growingseason.Stems (Petiole)The water lily stems, orpetioles, which connect thefloating leaves to rootsanchored at the bottom, areusually longer than necessaryto allow the floating leavesto reach the water surface. 14. My Plant - Water LilyDifferences between hardy water lilies and tropical water liliesHardy Water LiliesMany, though not all, float on the surfaceof the water and many are cup-shaped withsome starry.Hardy pads are rather thick and leatherywith smooth edges.Hardies grow horizontally from and alonga fleshy rhizomatous rootstock.Propagation - From division for exactduplication, from seed for variationAccording from what I see from the water lilies in the lake I found,Im sure it is a tropical water lily, not hardy. 15. My Plant - Water LilyTropical Water LiliesAll stand above the water and shapesare usually starry but some varieties aremore cupped.Tropicals grow from a single centralcrown. All leaves and flowers radiate fromthis point and growth is vertical.Tropical pads are usually somewhat thinwith edges slightly scalloped or toothy.Propagation - From tuber and divisionfor exact duplication, from seed forvariation. In some varieties known as"viviparous", from new plants producedon the leaves. 16. My Plant - Water LilyEach leaf lasts about6 weeks beforeturning yellow.Tropical water lilieshave much strongerfragrance, evenstronger than the hardywater lilies.Tropical Water Liliescome in bright shadesof white, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and red. They tend to bloom for amonth or two and it staysopen later in the day. Thetropicals require warmertemperatures than hehardies to bloom. The pads are largerthan the hardies andoften taking up muchmore space in thewater than they do.
