1. Introduction

For the purpose of creating a better city, investigation on three cities, one ancient city, present city and lastly future city was conducted and information collected to better understand what is a city’s history, the components and elements involved, its stages of development and what makes it hospitable for its citizen.

Furthermore the city’s topography, hierarchy, topography and so forth was researched to better implement improvements in the new “X” city. To show also the relationship the city’s share with the natural environment and how to incorporate these ideas and ideologies within the “X” city.

Finally the “X” city must be one that is sustainable to ensure its citizens wellbeing, continued development and progression.

2. The City

What is a City?A city is a moderately and highly systematized center of population to which its size is superior and functions are more important than a town or village.

Brief History:The first cities began to appear during the new Stone Age when the increased crop production due to developed agricultural techniques guaranteed to support a permanent population.Ancient Greece built the city state, which is an important form in the rise of the Roman Empire as well as the medieval Italian trading centers of Venice, Genoa and Florence. Once the Middle Ages came to an end, cities became gradually more under political control of centralized government.

What makes a city? What makes a good City?Good cities are those that accept and encourage ethnic diversity, support and encourage the arts, have access to venture capital to stimulate and motivate entrepreneurship and innovation and promote healthy environments that provide clean air and water.

What are future cities? It is a term used to imagine what intentions a city will have, how they will operate, what systems will plan them and how they relate to their stake holders (citizens, governments, business, investors and others)

3. Investigation and Data Collection:Ancient City: Pompeii

Pompeii was founded in the 7th century B.C. by the Romans. It had a population of about 11,000. Many villas in the surrounding area. Temperate climate. Built in the shadow of a volcano. Geography dominated by the mountain to the northwest and its immediate view over the sea.

Most of the city is very much dis-levelled and sloping Extremely fertile soil because of volcanic ash: particular crops that flourished were the grape

and olives. Good access to river and waterways At the time those were the most efficient way of transportation Used as a safe port. Multicultural society

1. Pompeii typical of roman towns: class divisions/social structure formed distinct groups:

i) Slavesii) Freedmen(Freed slaves)iii) Freeborn(Had never been slaves)

Strictly patriarchal

(Governed and controlled by men; women had less rights)

Hierarchy:-

Senior Elite: -not directly involved in politics.-High position romans who came to Pompeii on holiday

Local Elite:-Wealthy land owners-Involved in politics

Freedmen:-Former Slaves-Important part of the economy-no political rights however their children are freeborn thus they can participate in political affairs.

Slaves:-Economic backbone-workers

Women:-Couldn’t vote-Drew power from religious roles-had a voice in politics but could not be politicians

Infrastructure: - Used aqua ducts made of concrete to carry water. Source of water from

highlands Aqua ducts divided into three channels: for public baths/public buildings.

Another for private houses. The last bigger channel for public fountains. This provided water constantly

Before the aqua duct wells were used and collection of rain water Tunnels underneath the town were used as sewer with drainage system

from the wealthy households City had a complex water system, an amphitheater(a place where

gladiatorial matches took place) , gymnasium, republic building, the forum(the heart of Pompeii/the center of civic life/political, religious and commercial activity), market place, basilica(Pompeii law court/one of the most important buildings in Pompeii),theatres, shops, brothels, laundries, public buildings, places of worship(temples to Jupiter/Apollo), houses, public water system, traffic system(stone roads), open sewers in the roads and a port

The religions and town planning show more Greek and oriental/north African style.

The New City: Haven the city floating on water

Situation:

-No more land for development

-As city’s population increases, governments don’t have the money to build modern apartments

-Rising energy costs

-Cars and industries are polluting the air

Proposed Solution:

70% of the world’s surface is covered by ocean. Unclaimed international waters.

Build a self-sustaining city that floats on water. The ocean is endless and offers countless bounties. It is an open space so as for energy production solar panels and wind farms can be established. This will give the town free clean energy. So to come up with the solution to this problem I performed an intensive investigation on previous cities. So it seemed logical for the city to be a floating city on water. I worked on their disadvantages and tried to come up with solutions to these problems and used the advantages as a guideline for the new city called “Haven”. Analysis of how these cities used their environment came into consideration when planning for “Haven”. Only the best ideas were chosen in the planning of the new town. Such as the infrastructure like the use of bridges to cross from one sector to another.

The important characteristics and Elements of Haven:

Kiraly Renaud 0320322 Ms.Iffa FNBE AUG 2014 Taylors University

ENBE Final Project Part A- Report The Better Livable Town Representation

- The city is in a radial grid divided into 6 entities serving their own function in a hexagonal formation.

-Is that its shape makes it buoyant.

-It has a round underwater surface that makes it perfect for floating.

-It uses the large expense of sea as a primary food source so fishing is key factor in income.

-Also with vast amount of space free clean energy can be acquired from wind farms and solar farms.

-Desalination process can ensure the city with clean drinking water.

-It has its own governing state so it does not belong to any country. This allows more freedom towards its citizens.

-With minimum amounts of personal vehicles the city itself becomes pollution free.

-Since it’s a new concept of city, tourism can be a factor for economic growth

Conclusion:

Basically Haven is a new idea of city with new ideologies that does not segregate anyone. All is fair and those who decide to live upon it are all involved in its continued growth and development. The city itself is self-sustaining, clean and a good environment for activities. Of course organizations, systems, rules and regulations shall be put in place as a precautionary measure to inhibit the rise in social issues.

Also specific personnel shall be in charge with the safe keeping of it city and its citizens be it police, cleaners, firemen etc… The city itself will be one that runs on efficient and clean energy sources to keep pollution to a low. This will attract investors in the long run and ensure its continued growth.

Lastly the city will be open to all who wish for a better living experience provided that they contribute towards the advancement in Haven possibly through financial aid, technical expertise or manual labor. Haven is a place for all.
