These days, more and more people learn English and computers for many

different purposes, either for career or school advancement. They realize

that English as an international language is widely used around the world. It

is an important communication tool for people to interact with others.

Knowing how to use computers is another tool necessary to do business

works. Businesses are even more demanding nowadays. They require their

employees to master both of the skills. One who has very little or no skills

at all of being able to communicate in English and using computers will

have a very slim chance of getting career in one company. Due to the era

of globalization, in which more and more foreign investors come to open

new stores, factories or just to do other business deals, the necessity to

master the skills of communicating in English and using computers is no

doubt a must.

Dewasa ini, makin banyak orang belajar bahasa Inggris dan komputer

untuk berbagai macam tujuan, baik untuk kemajuan karir maupun sekolah.

Semakin banyak orang menyadari bahwa bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa

internasional banyak dipakai di seluruh dunia. Bahasa Inggris adalah alat

komunikasi yang sangat penting. Mengetahui bagaimana menggunakan

komputer dengan baik juga sama pentingnya. Bahkan dewasa ini, dunia

bisnis semakin menuntut. Mereka menuntut pekerja untuk dapat

menguasai kedua ketrampilan tersebut. Kecil kemungkinannya bagi karyawan

untuk improvisasi, inovasi dan meningkatkan karir bila dia tidak mampu

berbahasa Inggris dan tidak tahu menggunakan komputer beserta

aplikasinya dengan baik. Ditambah lagi dengan datangnya era

globalisasi, dimana semakin derasnya arus informasi dari luar dan

semakin banyaknya investor asing datang untuk membuka toko, pabrik-

Lembaga Pendidikan Indonesia-Amerika, better known as LPIA,

provides courses of English and computers to people. It has existed for

more than 16 years serving 35,000 students in 64 LPIA branches in Java,

Bali, and Kalimantan (more to come in Sumatra). Drs. H.M. Ali Badarudin

SH. (the President Director) established LPIA in 1992 in Jakarta with the

operating license from the Department of Education of the Republic of Indonesia

# 14145/PLSM/ I/1-435/VIII/1992. It employs around 300 branch managers,

accountants, marketing officers, front-officers and around 1,000

instructors spread out in branches in Jakarta, Tangerang, Bogor, Bekasi,

Central Java, East Java, Bali and Kalimantan areas. Based in Graha LPIA

building located on Perkantoran Mall Klender Jl. I Gusti Ngurah Rai Blok B3

No. 16 - 18, Klender, East Jakarta, LPIA is a healthy educational institution

with its monthly gross income of Rp. 1,200,000,000,00. LPIA’s FAIES

English teaching method with its proprietary language laboratory and CIA

computer system are the things separate it from others running the same

kind of business.

Lembaga Pendidikan Indonesia-Amerika, terkenal dengan nama

LPIA, adalah institusi pendidikan bahasa Inggris dan komputer. Telah berdiri

selama 16 tahun, LPIA melayani 35,000 siswa di 68 cabangnya di Jawa,

Bali dan Kalimantan (akan dibuka cabang LPIA di Sumatra). Didirikan

pada th 1992 di Jakarta oleh Bpk Drs. H.M. Ali Badarudin SH. (Presiden

Direktur) dengan ijin operasi Departemen Pendidikan Nasional R.I. #

14145/PLSM/I/1-435/VIII/ 1992, LPIA mempekerjakan sekitar 300 orang

manajer, akuntan, pemasaran, “front-office” dan 1.000 pengajar bahasa

Inggris dan komputer di cabang-cabang LPIA di Jakarta, Tangerang, Bogor,

Bekasi, Jawa Tengah, Jawa Timur, Bali dan Kalimantan. Berpusat di Graha

LPIA, di Perkantoran Mall Klender Jl. I Gusti Ngurah Rai Blok B No. 16 - 18,

Klender, Jakarta Timur, LPIA berpendapatan kotor sekitar Rp. 1,2

milyar/bulan. Pengajaran bahasa Inggris FAIES dengan lab bahasanya

serta sistim pendidikan komputer CIA membuat LPIA berbeda dari

LPIA applies the FAIES (First Aid In English System) teaching method

which later turns to be the NEW FAIES. The original FAIES, which was

formed by the Drs. HM. Ali Badarudin SH., 14 years ago, has

undergone some changes adjusted to the modern ways of English teaching.

It comprises of the communicative, direct, oral, and aural approaches.

Basically, students are geared to master the skills with real objects by

the English in real life situations. The LPIA computer trainings use the

CIA (Computer Integrated Abilities) teaching method where students

learn the theories, practices, developments of the skills, by integrating

applications useful for real life situations. What makes the LPIA’s

teaching method different from others is that the LPIA teachers teach the

skills, of using English and computers, instead of the science to its

students.

LPIA menerapkan metode pengajaran FAIES (First Aid In English

System) yang kemudian menjadi NEW FAIES. FAIES, pertama kali dibuat

oleh Bapak Drs. HM. Ali Badarudin SH. 14 tahun lalu, telah berubah sesuai

dengan metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris baru. Metode itu meliputi

pendekatan komunikatif, langsung, oral, dan aural. Pada dasarnya siswa

dibentuk untuk mahir berbahasa dengan belajar obyek langsung tanpa

perlu terjemahan. Guru menggunakan tata- bahasa benar dengan

menekankan pada tinggi rendahnya suara, intonasi, pengucapan kata,

untuk membuat siswa mampu menggunakan bahasa Inggris pada situasi

sehari-hari. Pelatihan komputer di LPIA menggunakan metode CIA

(Computer Integrated Abilities) dimana siswa belajar teori, praktek,

beserta pengembangannya dengan menyatukan penggunaan berbagai

macam program aplikasi yang dapat dipakai di situasi sehari-hari.

Dibandingkan dengan yang lain, LPIA tidak mengajarkan ilmu

pengetahuan pada para siswanya, tetapi ketrampilan penggunaannya.

with the latest high-tech computers. Interactively involved in a simulated,

real-life like dialog with native speakers, students learn what to say and

accurately. Movies and sounds make students keep interested in language

learning. In teaching in the class, the LPIA teachers use pictures, real

things (realia), musical instruments, tapes and other teaching aids to keep

students being motivated in the process of learning. With a special deal, a

school can even own the same multimedia language laboratory used in

many LPIA branches. In addition, LPIA uses only the newest high-tech

Pentium-IV class computers in its computer laboratories.

Selain para pengajarnya yang ramah dan menghibur, LPIA menyediakan

fasilitas belajar yang menyenangkan di laboratorium bahasa, yang dilengkapi

dengan komputer teknologi mutakhir. Secara interaktif, para siswa

belajar berkomunikasi dengan orang asing di suatu simulasi di komputer,

menerapkan apa yang telah mereka pelajari di dalam kelas mengenai apa

yang harus diucapkan, bagaimana dan kapan mengucapkan pola-pola

pembicaraan. Latihan pengucapan kata dilakukan dengan dibantu oleh satu

indikator penunjuk untuk membantu siswa koreksi diri apakah

pengucapan kata sudah benar. Pertunjukkan film yang diadakan juga

semakin membuat siswa betah dan tetap bersemangat dalam belajar.

Dalam pengajaran di dalam kelas, pengajar LPIA menggunakan gambar-

gambar, benda-benda (realia), instrumen musik, tape dan alat bantu

pengajaran lainnya untuk tetap menjaga motivasi belajar siswa. Dengan

satu kontrak khusus, satu sekolah atau perusahaan bahkan dapat

memiliki laboratorium bahasa yang sama dimiliki LPIA di seluruh cabang-

cabangnya.

Events such as debating class makes students practice debating about

any current issues. Public speaking class, another extra-curricular

activity, encourages students to practice how to give formal speeches to

outing classes (picnics) out of town every period of time. Here, students

do outdoor activities and all activities are conducted in English. LPIA

English Club, another kind of regular extra-curricular activity, takes place

on Sundays. In this club, students practice talking in English about many

kinds of subjects. LPIA provides a wall-magazine for students to show

their class works. Another media is LPIA’s own tabloid: Tabloid

Pendidikan, which is given free to all students.

LPIA memberikan pengalaman belajar yang unik kepada siswanya untuk

kesempatan bagi mereka untuk mengikuti berbagai macam kegiatan

ekstra-kurikuler. Kegiatan seperti debating class memberikan

terkini yang ada di masyarakat. Public speaking class, kegiatan ekstra-

kurikuler yang lain, mendorong siswa untuk praktek berpidato di depan

ketakutan berrbicara di depan umum. LPIA juga mengadakan outing

classes (piknik) keluar kota dari waktu ke waktu. Di kegiatan ini, siswa

dapat melakukan berbagai macam permainan di alam terbuka yang

kesemuanya itu dilakukan dalam bahasa Inggris. LPIA English Club,

kegiatan ekstra-kurikuler yang lain, diadakan di hari Minggu. Di klub ini,

siswa berdiskusi berbagai macam topik dalam bahasa Inggris. LPIA

menyediakan wall-magazine bagi siswa yang ingin memamerkan hasil

kerja di kelasnya. Media lain untuk kegiatan ini adalah tabloid LPIA
