Evaluation question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Getting started

The song we chose was “Cool kids” by Echosmith.

From their music video

Page 3: Evaluation question 2

Why? The reason we picked this song is because we could use the

lyrics to make a good narrative. We feel this story gives a strong message; an insight into how people feel and act about bullying, they just want to be themselves but have to change to suit everyone's standards.

Being bullied and called names

Our idea – Music video Our idea for the song "Cool kids" was to have a unpopular girl

who was bullied by cool kids, she would sit by a bin during her breaks and read books.

Our idea – Music video One day she had enough and decided to have a makeover with

her friend to become popular. Once this makeover is complete she wow's the popular kids and rejects them

Analysis So when looking at our music video, we successfully represented

the narrative, however looking at it we can see how we have done it from one side; Shelby has made a makeover but still embraces her smart side meaning she is a better version of herself and is happy

Still working hard and embracing smartness

Analysis

In the video I can see that we have some conventions that we wanted in our idea like how she sits next to the bin, giving a secondary meaning that she could be seen as trash and isn't liked. Its the props and settings that help to give this additional meaning

Our idea – Digipak The idea for the digipak was to have Shelby in both

costumes before and after her transformation. We wanted to make them tinted different colours and have them partially transparent.

Here is inspiration from Adele's – Send my love music video

Colour change shows emotion change

Our idea – Advert The idea for the advert was to have a image where the costume

and background was the same as one on the digipak so this creates a link between them; meaning if someone saw this advert they will look for a similar picture when looking for the album. We also wanted Shelby positions on some object

On a stool

Plain, light background

“College” costume

Page 10: Evaluation question 2

Why? We decided on these ideas as the transparency and tinted

colour can show a transition from one version of herself to another and the different colours represent her emotion change. This gives additional meaning to an effect that is eye catching.

Red/pink – costume and glamorous/happy

Blue/green – sad, depressed and envy

Page 11: Evaluation question 2

Why? We chose this idea for the advert as we wanted a strong link

between all our media texts and this is a good way to do so. The image we picked also had a school feel which is what we wanted to represent the theme

Same costume

Analysis When looking at both our digipak and advert, I feel like we

successfully conveyed our idea, the digipak is a visual representation about change of appearance, emotion and happiness. The advert successfully links to both the digipak and music video due to the same costume has been used; Shelby looks like a college student.

Page 13: Evaluation question 2

Analysis However we was going to link the digipak and advert through

the background but scrapped that and used the costume instead.

Same costume

Audience Feedback

To get this audience feedback, we created a questionnaire on Survey Monkey

What this means From these charts, we can see that our music video, digipak and

advert all together was successful and to good standard. The majority of people liked our work and enjoyed it. We have an average mark our of 5 and we got a 4 which is great.

This type of research we used was quantitative as it was yes or no but the rating our of 5 is qualitative research

Page 24: Evaluation question 2

What this means However this does mean that some people did not like our work

but this is a small minority and this is due to them not being the target market of the song and genre meaning that they may not like what we have done as its not there style.

Our target market is people ages 12-20 who like pop. This can either be boys or girls but girls are primarily targeted.

Additional Feedback

One question had a comment section; this question was “Did you see anything that needed changing in the music video”

I gathered all the comments and make a word collage to represent this feedback.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I feel the combination of our music video and the ancillary text makes a very successful project. They all have the same theme and style; they represent school/college kids. We have the same costumes featured in the music video, digipak and advert; along with colour, style and theme.

Furthermore audience feedback can confirm that our media texts are good quality and successful. From the charts we have we can easily see that people enjoyed the music video and they can see a clear link to the digipak and advert.
