Concept 1: Absolute Reference

•  An absolute reference is a cell or range reference in a formula whose location does not change when the formula is copied. •  To stop the relative adjustment of cell references, enter a $ (dollar sign)

character before the column letter and the row number. •  When a formula containing an absolute cell reference is copied to

another row and column location in the worksheet, the cell reference does not change.

•  A cell reference also can be a mixed reference. •  In this type of reference, either the column letter or the row number is

preceded with the $. •  This makes only the row or the column absolute. •  When a formula containing a mixed cell reference is copied to another location

in the worksheet, only the part of the cell reference that is not absolute changes relative to its new location in the worksheet.

Concept 2: Sheet Name

•  Each sheet in a workbook can be assigned a descriptive sheet name to help identify the contents of the sheet. •  The following guidelines should be followed when naming a sheet. A

sheet name •  Can be up to 31 characters. •  Can be entered in uppercase or lowercase letters or a combination (it will

appear as entered). •  Can contain any combination of letters, numbers, and spaces. •  Cannot contain the characters : ? * / \. •  Cannot be enclosed in square brackets [ ].

•  Double-clicking the sheet tab makes the sheet active and highlights the existing sheet name in the tab. •  The existing name is cleared as soon as you begin to type the new

name.

Concept 3: AutoFill

• The AutoFill feature makes entering a series of numbers, numbers and text combinations, dates, or time periods easier by logically repeating and extending the series. •  AutoFill recognizes trends and automatically extends data

and alphanumeric headings as far as you specify.

Concept 4: Sheet and 3-D References

• Formulas can reference cells in other sheets of a workbook •  A sheet reference in a formula consists of the name of

the sheet, followed by an exclamation point and the cell or range reference. •  A 3-D reference uses the same cell or range on multiple

sheets.

Concept 5: Find and Replace

•  The Find and Replace feature helps you quickly find specific information and automatically replace it with new information. •  The Find command locates all occurrences of the text or numbers

you specify. •  The Replace command is used with the Find command to locate the

specified entries and replace the located occurrences with the replacement text you specify. •  You also can find cells that match a format you specify and replace the

format with another.

•  Finding and replacing data and formats is both fast and accurate, but you need to be careful when replacing that you do not replace unintended matches.

top and columns on the left side of the worksheet only.

Concept 8: What-If Analysis

• What-if analysis is a technique used to evaluate the effects of changing selected factors in a worksheet. •  This technique is a common accounting function that has

been made much easier with the introduction of spreadsheet programs. •  By substituting different values in cells that are

referenced by formulas, you can quickly see the effect of the changes when the formulas are recalculated.

Concept 9: Goal Seek

• The Goal Seek tool is used to find the value needed in one cell to attain a result you want in another cell. •  Goal Seek varies the value in the cell you specify until a

formula that is dependent on that cell returns the desired result. •  The value of only one cell can be changed.
