2. We say things in rather odd ways.. We use things like 3. Metaphors Writing that compares two unlike things that have something in common.Her hair is a waterfall of silk. 4. Simile Comparison between two unlike things that have something in common. Always uses the words like or as. 5. Another simile. The concert was boring.OR The concert was as interesting as watching paint dry. 6. And another. The bologna sandwich was gross.OR The bologna sandwich in the back corner of the refrigerator was like a nightmare. 7. And even more similes. The moldy potato stinks. OR The moldy potato smelled like a dead skunk that had been rotting under the porch for weeks. 8. Alliteration Repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more words or syllables. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. 9. Personification An author gives an idea, object, or animal qualities or traits of a person. 10. Onomatopoeia Imitation of natural sounds in word form. Words help us form mental pictures about things, people, or places that are described. Buzz, hiss, bang, sizzle, snap, pop 11. Hyperbole Exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect. Compares two items, but does so with exaggeration. Is not a simile!!! I nearly died laughing! 12. Repetition Repetition Repetition One or more words are repeated to show urgency or importance.
