• Movies first came to Mumbai on 7 July 1896. The Lumière brothers sent a man named Marius Sestier to screen their short films to a mostly British audience at the swanky Watson hotel.

• The first Indian film released in India was Shree pundalik a silent film in Marathi by Dadasaheb Torne on 18 May 1912 at 'Coronation Cinematograph', Mumbai. Some have argued that Pundalik does not deserve the honour of being called the first Indian film because it was a photographic recording of a popular Marathi play, and because the cameraman—a man named Johnson.

20th Century IndustryThe film industry evolved with first silent feature film of India, Raja Harishchandra (1913), which was made by Dadasaheb Phalke. The movie initially did not have much response from the public but later on gained publicity.

* It was by the 1930's that the industry started producing more than 200 films every year. * Alam Ara (1931) was the first Indian sound film, produced by Ardeshir Irani. * By late 1950s, the first color films were released. During this period, the films were defined by sumptuous romantic musicals and melodramas.* Late 1960s and early 1970s gave rise to romantic movies, action films and violent films. * In the mid 1990s, the cinema quality increased to a great extent and the box-office was stroked by family-centric romantic musicals once again.

This era brought immense popularity to the Bollywood, so much that its films appeal the audiences of all segments.• India is now producing 1000 films in a year of different genre.* Today Indian Cinema, especially Hindi cinema is not only popular in India but also in parts of Middle East, Pakistan, UK and virtually every other place where Indians live. * Even films like Lagaan, Happy new Year, ABCD 2 and PK etc. have earn a good profit in other subcontinents also.•This things indicates that India is poised for bigger things as far as Cinema goes.

largest film industry in the world with over 1000 films produced every year.

• Kisan Kanya (1937) was the first colored movie produced in India.

• The first 3D movie in Hindi was 'Shiva ka Insaaf'.

• . The highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time is the 2014 satirical science fiction comedy PK. It grossed around $100 million.

• Aamir Khan's ‘Lagaan’ had the maximum number of British actors ever to be cast in a single movie in the history of Bollywood cinema.

• Sunil Dutt initially used to be an RJ for Radio Ceylon and wanted to interview his favorite actress Nargis. But he could not say a single word in front of her & the interview had to be cancelled. Years later, when he finally got a chance to work with her in ‘Mother India’ (1957), they fell in love and got married.

• In the film ‘Heroine,’ Kareena Kapoor wore over 130 different dresses by top fashion designers from all over the world. It has been reported that Kareena’s wardrobe for the film was one of the most expensive out of all the Bollywood movies ever created!

• . Saif Ali Khan was the original choice for Shahrukh Khan’s role in ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. In fact, it is harder to believe that Tom Cruise was also considered for the role of Raj Malhotra!

• Rockstar’ was shot in reverse, with the climax being shot first. Reason: The film makers did not want to mess Ranbir Kapoor’s hairstyle.

• Anil Kapoor’s family lived in Raj Kapoor’s garage when they first moved to Mumbai. Later, they shifted to a room in one of Mumbai’s middle-class suburbs.

• Mughal-e-Azam' was a trilingual movie - with all scenes shot thrice in Hindi, Tamil & English. When the Tamil one flopped miserably, the English language one was aborted almost immediately!

• Raj Kapoor’s ‘Mera Naam Joker’ was the first Hindi movie to have not one but two intervals!

• Ila Arun and Alka Yagnik shared the best female playback award for ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ in ‘Khalnayak.’ This was the only time when two playback singers shared an award in the history of Bollywood awards.

• ‘Kaho Naa.. Pyar Hai’ was added to the Guinness Book of World Records 2002 edition for winning the most number of awards for a movie. The movie won a total of 92 awards!

• The song ‘Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon’ in the film by the same name is the longest Hindi film song. The length of this iconic song is 20 minutes and the song is featured in 3 installments in the film.

• Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin's great-grandfather Maurice Koechlin, was the Chief engineer for the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and also the iconic Statue of Liberty.

• Hrithik’s actual surname is Nagrath & not Roshan!

• Ashok Kumar was a lab assistant in Bombay Talkies before he became an actor in 1936.

• Mera Naam Joker & LOC: Kargil both with a run time of 255 minutes are the longest films ever made in India.

• Indians buy 2.7 billion movie tickets annually, the highest in the world. But our average ticket price is among the lowest in the world, so revenues are a fraction compared to Hollywood!
