FILM MAGAZINESBy Molly Smith

Empire Magazine• Empire is populist in both approach and coverage. It reviews both

mainstream films and art films, but feature articles concentrate on the former.

• From the website, it looks like they review more action movies than any other genre.

• Apparently, Empire magazine is the biggest movie magazine on the planet (according to greatmagazines.co.uk).

• I think Empire magazine is aimed at men between the age of 15 and 30.• The magazine itself involves a lot of text and a lot of colour. The front page

always consists of a character from a film in an action-style pose, whether the character is carrying a weapon or just standing in a strong action pose.

Total Film Magazine• Total Film is a UK-based film magazine published 13 times a year (every four

weeks) by Future Publishing. The magazine was launched in 1997 and offers cinema, DVD and Blu-ray news, reviews and features.

• I think the magazine is aimed at most men, but I think there is some female readers as well because it covers a wide range of films and TV programs that I think both genders would watch.

• It is also aimed at people who share an interest in film and finding out the latest film gossip.

• The magazine looks very similar to Empire magazine but it sometimes has TV series on its front cover as the main feature.

• Inside the magazine is a lot of text with a few pictures; the format of the pages is quite plain and simple.

Little White Lies Magazine• Little White Lies is an internationally distributed movie magazine. It has

been described as one of the "magazines at the vanguard of the independent publishing movement".

• They review different films that are mainstream and independent, yet focusing more on independent films.

• I think they are successful because their magazines are very creative, artistic and very detailed in what they write and design.

• I think they are aimed at an older audience, probably middle-aged men around the age of 25-50 and who are most likely to be middle-classed.

Uncut Magazine

• Uncut magazine, trademarked as UNCUT, is a monthly publication based in London. Uncut was launched in May 1997 as “a monthly magazine aimed at 25- to 45-year-old men that focuses on music and movies”.

• I think this magazine attracts an audience who are around the age of forty, maybe slightly younger or considerably older.

• It includes a book and a music section as well as a film section, so this can attract film, book and music lovers. The music, in particular is usually a genre that stereotypes the magazines target audience (mainly based on age).
