Formative Assessment(Using Free Digital Tools)

Have you ever cooked a Thanksgiving turkey? Did you put it in the oven, set the timer, and then come back four hours later hoping everything turned out just right? OR Did you peek in on how that bird was cooking, maybe basted it, covered it with foil, etc. Formative assessment is us peeking in on how our students are doing during the process of learning. This session will focus on tools that you can use to efficiently assess your students throughout the learning process.

What ingredients do you have in the kitchen? Everyone has eaten. What do they think?

Pre-Assessment what do our students already know, before the instruction begins? Pre-assessing on the first day of the unit is no good. The pre-assessment needs to happen well enough in advance of instruction so that appropriate modifications can be made. Summative assessment comes at the end of instruction and affords the student the opportunity to demonstrate in an authentic way what they have learned, hopefully by creating a new product that can shared with a real world audience. Today, though, are focus will be on formative assessment.

Informative assessments are the most useful because at the end of the unit, we are moving on to a new topic. Theres not much to do for students who have mastered the curriculum. Or think about the student who may have been bored for the entire unit because they already knew the material !! You could have extended their learning supporting the other learners. Its not just about finding weaknesses; its also about finding strengths !

Have students watch video segment, song, listen to an audio file, or read a passage from a current unit of study. After, they will create four statements: 3 truths and one lie.
