MontageMontage is a technique in film

editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.

MontageMontage can be used to show

three things:

1) The passage of time.2) Create symbolic meaning.3) To give the audience the

impression something has happened without showing the actual event.

The Passage of Time• The passage of time can be shown

by a number of short clips that portray a change or progression of the subjects in the clips.

• Sometimes a symbolic meaning or message can be created by editing two clips together in a montage.

Give an impression• Sometimes shots are edited together

to make the audience think that something is happening / has happened without having to show the actual event.

A brilliant example of this is in Alfred Hitchcock’s Pyscho.
