The “macro” environment that we are part of

Page 26: Get Ready For The Future: What You Should Learn Today To Succeed - presentations

What will economist do in the futureNo job or career part will be unaffected by technological progress, but only part of (most) jobs can be done by computers and robots for a long time to come

• Economists will be needed also in the future but the value of different skills will change

• Computing, solving complicated equations and models, gather data are things that machines can potentially do more efficiently

• Interpreting data, creating models based on new thinking, understanding which model makes sense in a particular environment, communicating results in a clear way will be still be very valuable!

Some words of advice to be competitive in the global market

Do something you enjoy doing, work life is long and not getting shorter anytime soon (pension systems will fail otherwise)

• Invest in your ability to do independent thinking and analysis, this is the last thing we will be able to automate

• Continue learning new skills

• Learn good English

• Work on your presentation skills

• Be curious and dare to follow your instincts, I’m an old school economist and most likely wrong about what you should do

The manager was very angry with this beginner who wanted a very high salary.

Logic is the key to success?

The beginner replied "Work is very difficult when you are a beginner. It becomes easier as you get experience."

He asked him why he wanted so much money whereas he had no experience.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is

You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the

time you get it built, they’ll want something new

The great thing about taking big chances when you’re younger is you have less to lose and you

don’t know as much. So you take big swings
