Acids & Bases

BEWARE

How do we characterise

chemicals/solutions ?

Acidic

Basic

Neutral

Examples ???

How do we know if Acid/Base/Neutral

?

pH defines a/b/n

Do you know the pH scale ????

What is an Acid ?

What is an Acid ?A proton donor (H+)

A pH less than 7

Reacts with bases

Which do you think are Acids ?

Game 1

Acids

Ethanoic acid

Carbonic acid

Tannic acid

Ascorbic acid

Citric acid

What will happen next ?

Drop an old coin in coke & watch what happens !

Now think of your teeth when you drink Coke !

What is a Base ?A proton acceptor (H+)

A pH greater than 7

Reacts with acids

Can you name any bases?

Which do you think are bases?

Household cleaners

Drain cleaners

Oven cleaners

sodium hydroxide & ammonia

Weak bases-toothpaste

antacid tablets & Baking powder.

Bases

Strongest - Super !!!!!

• Carborane Acid H(CHB11Cl11) pka -25

• Lithium Diisopropylamide [(CH3)2CH]2NLi pkb 22

Acids and Bases in Nature

Body Buffer pH

Outside the acceptable range of pHProteins are denatured and digested Enzymes lose their ability to functionDeath may occur

Red Litmus Blue Litmus

Acidic solution Stays red Turns red

Neutral solution Stays red Stays blue

Alkaline solution Turns blue Stays blue

Litmus Paper

Universal Indicator

Mixture of indicators:specific ph identified (1-14)

Experiment !!!!Which is an Acid or Base?

Red cabbage - flavin (an anthocyanin)-

indicator

pH 2 4 6 8 10 12

Color Red Purple Violet Blue Blue-Green Greenish Yellow

Neutralisation

Acid + Base = Salt + Water & Gas

What Happens ???

The acid breaks down the shell into carbon dioxide and lime.

Experiment 2.

Making a bath FIZZ !!!

Bath FizzSodium bicarbonate reacts with citric acid when dissolved in water

3NaHCO3 + C6H8O7 --> C6H5Na3O7 + 3CO2 + 3H2O

Bath Fizzes

1. Take all of the ingredients provided & roll into a ball

2. Leave to dry 3. Wrap & surprise mum & Dad!4. Have a nice bath !!!!
