The graphic sign is a simple image that represents an object,an idea, or transmit information.

In visual communication, the graphic sign has become the most important element for organising the messages of visual language.

Sign: Any motion, gesture, image, sound or event that transmits meaning. It demands an action from the receiver. It uses universal codes and simple geometric shapes to frame them.

Symbol: something visible (a person, a place, an action,

a word, a thing etc.) that represents something invisible. Its meaning depends on the different societies and cultures.

Icon: It is an image that represents an object in a realistic way. It

describes qualities of the object itself.

What is the difference between icon and symbol?

Icon: its shape is similar to the object which represents. It is instantly recognizable.

= peace

Symbol: it may have no visible resemblance of the object at all. Its meaning has to be learned.

= contact

Ideogram: or ideograph, from Greek means idea +

grafo (to write). It is a graphic symbol that represents an idea or concept.

Pictogram: an ideogram becomes a pictogram when

it uses a picture of the object itself. It could be a sign.

Acronym: A word formed from the initial letters of a name.
