Our traditional customs
On 1st January Santa Claus brings gifts to the kids
On 6th January kids sing the carols for the Epiphany
Kids wear funny costumes and dance the traditional dance “Gaitanaki”
On Clear Monday we fly kites to the sky
On 1st March we wear a bracelet made of red and white thread as a charm to protect us from sun.
At the end of the month we hang our bracelets on tree branches. Birds will take them to make their nests.
On April First Fool’s Day we make jokes
Before Easter we paint eggs.
Before Easter we decorate the Epitaph in the church
In the Easter we go to the church to celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection, holding candles.
We throw fireworks to celebrate Easter.
On 1st May we make a wreath of flowers
In July farmers harvest their fields.
On 15th August, we celebrate for Virgin Mary.
It is a day we spend with our families
People go to the church to pray.
A lot of people travel to the island of Tinos to pray at Virgin Mary’s monastery.
Some people climb up the cliff where the monastery is on knees to show their mortification.
In the night there are a lot of festivals.
In September farmers harvest the grapes to make wine and they celebrate it with great feasts.
Farmers harvest the olive trees to make oil and they celebrates it with great feasts.
In Christmas we decorate a small boat instead of a tree,
On Christmas and New Year’s eve kids sing the carols
