How Money Makes Money

Most people earn money by going out to work every day. But there are other ways of making money such

as putting it in a bank or investing it in bonds, stocks, or mutual funds.

Bonds

When you buy a bond, you are lending money to the company that issues the bonds. The loan is for a

specific amount of time. For example, you might lend a construction company money for three years and

get a 4% guaranteed return. That means you get all your money back plus an additional 4% at the end of

three years. In addition to being used to finance business ventures, bonds are issued by cities, states, and

even the federal government. The federal bonds are the safest.

Stocks When you buy a stock, you are actually buying part ownership in a company. If the company is

successful, you can get your original investment (the amount you paid) back plus a percentage of the

company’s profit. If the company is not successful, you might not get all of your original investment back.

There is no guarantee. The reason people invest in stocks is that they often pay back more than bonds do.

However, stocks are a riskier investment.

Mutual Funds Mutual funds allow groups of investors to put their money together and buy a variety of stocks and bonds.

Because a mutual fund invests in many different stocks and/or bonds, there is less risk involved. For

example, if one stock goes down, another usually goes up. By owning a wide variety of stocks, a mutual

fund investor is protected from big losses.

The Potluck

A potluck is a lunch or dinner to which everyone brings a dish to share with everyone else. A potluck is a

nice way for friends or family to have a meal without one person or family doing all of the preparation

and cooking. Many people do a potluck for celebrations such as birthdays and holidays where there will

be a lot of people.

The name “potluck” comes from two English words, “pot” and “luck.” The luck is that people bring their

most delicious dish in the pot. But people don’t leave everything up to chance in a potluck. This is fine

because a lot of people make some dishes better than anyone else. For example, if someone makes a very

good potato salad, the host of the celebration can ask that person to bring potato salad. And if someone

really does not like to cook, that person can bring beverages, or buy a special dessert, that others will

enjoy. It’s all about sharing, not making all of the guests cook!

People gather at a potluck to eat and to talk, and even to celebrate a holiday. People are usually in a good

mood. They know that some of their favorite dishes will be there, and they can try some new ones.

Page 9: Guia ingles v

Potlucks are better for the host because everyone helps out. He or she can relax and enjoy the celebration

or meal because he or she is not busy preparing all of the food. Potlucks are happy events with some of

the most delicious food!

____ 1. Everyone brings a dish to share at a potluck.

____ 2. Potlucks are popular for meals and celebrations.

____ 3. The mood at a potluck is relaxed.

____ 4. A potluck allows to host to enjoy the celebration because everyone shares the preparation.

Language Progress

You might think the kind of progress people make with languages is learning to speak

them. This is one kind of language progress. The most widely spoken languages in the world today are

Mandarin, Spanish, and English. Certainly when more people speak the same languages it can lead to

better communication, understanding, and cultural and business exchanges. This is a form of progress.

But as more and more people speak the same languages, other languages are forgotten, and lost.

There are approximately 7,000 languages spoken in the world today. A language that is

spoken is considered “living.” A language that no one speaks anymore is a “dead” language. Often, this

means that the last living speaker of the language has died. According to experts a language dies every

two weeks! However, some researchers are making progress toward saving some languages that are in

danger.

National Geographic’s Enduring Voices Project works on locating parts of the world

where languages are in danger. Some of these “hot spots” include central and eastern Russia, parts of

South America, and the northwest and central United States. In these places the younger generations learn

a widely spoken language, such as Russian, Spanish, or English, but do not become fluent or even

proficient in the language of their culture. As each generation uses the language less and less, the

language becomes endangered, and may disappear.

To try to save a language, the Enduring Voices team visits the speakers of the language.

They try to preserve the language by recording the people speaking, filming them, and writing down the

words they say. The work is important, and they make progress one language at a time.

____ 5. The main idea of this reading is the number of English, Spanish, and Mandarin speakers in the world

today.

____ 6. A language “dies” every two weeks.

____ 7. All people in the Mongol Empire spoke one language.

____ 8. Languages are in danger when the younger generations do not speak them.

Luis, 15

Page 10: Guia ingles v

Something that would make life better in my town is improved public transportation. There is a train that

goes near my town, but the closest stop is 5 miles away. That’s not realistic for people who do not have

cars. Some people take the bus from the center of my town to the train. The bus is slow because it makes a

lot of stops. But, a better solution would be for the train to come through my town. I know that might be

expensive, and take a long time to build. Maybe there could be a bus that goes directly from the center of

my town to the train station, without any other stops. That would save time, and make it easier for people

to use the train.

____ 9. Luis thinks improved public transportation will make life better in his town.

Living without Money

The area called the South Bronx is one of New York City’s poorest neighborhoods. Most of the city’s

residents never visit the area and don’t really want to think about how difficult life is for its residents. One

group of people, however, does care. They are the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a group of religious

men who voluntarily live and work in poor communities. There are currently 120 of these men working in

14 different countries. They take a vow of poverty which means that they promise not to earn any money,

but instead live on what the people in the community are able to give to them.

Each of the brothers, as they are called, has a small room with a chair, a desk and a mat on the floor. They

don’t have televisions or cell phones or computers. A few own some books or a musical instrument. They

wear long robes and shave their heads. Each week they visit the homes of people who are asking for food

or other help with their lives. Besides distributing food, they offer friendship and counsel.

Father Rich has been with the community since 1990. He says that some things in the community have

changed and some haven’t. For example, the building next door is full of families who are living in

poverty. Someone has put a new door on the building, but unfortunately other than that, life is pretty much

the same for the people living there.

____ 10. Many New York City residents visit the South Bronx.

____ 11. The friars take a vow of poverty, which means they promise not to earn money.

____ 12. Each of the brothers has a cell phone.

____ 13. Father Rich is new to the community.

The History of Globalization

You may think that globalization is strictly a modern phenomena. Although it has expanded greatly in the

past 50 years, it’s actually been going on for many centuries. For example, during the Islamic Golden Age

from 700 to 1200 AD, Muslim traders and explorers established an early form of global economy across

parts of the Mideast, Europe, Asia and Africa. This resulted in the exchange of goods, language,

knowledge and technology.

Page 11: Guia ingles v

After Ghengis Khan was declared ruler of the Mongol Empire in 1206, he began a series of wars which

resulted in more and more lands coming under his control. Starting in central Asia, he took over many of

the lands formerly controlled by Islamic leaders. At one point, the Mongol Empire stretched all the way

from Germany to Japan. This spread the sharing of goods and knowledge throughout the Old World.

While it didn’t result in a single, unified society, it did bring about greater communication and

cooperation among the people living in the area.

Beginning in the late 1400s and continuing throughout the 16th century, the Spanish and Portuguese

began explorations and trade ventures that linked the cultures and economies with those of many other

parts of the world including Africa, South America, North America and southern and eastern Asia. This

was the first major trade-based form of globalization. Their focus was on the Far East and their original

goal was to establish trade routes and set the prices of goods.

In 1600, the British East India Company, which is often called the first multinational corporation, was

established. It regulated trade between England and the India subcontinent. Soon after, in 1602, the Dutch

East India Company established a similar business. The British company was unique in that it was the

first to issue shares of stock so that people outside the company could own part of the company. This

helped speed up the spread of globalization by making more money available for the expansion of

international businesses.

____ 14. The main idea of this reading is the history of the Dutch East India Company.

____ 15. The Mideast, Europe, Asia, and Africa are examples of places that were part of early globalization.

____ 16. Spanish and Portuguese exploration linked languages and cultures.

____ 17. The goal of the British East India company was to spread the English language.

Globalization in Sports

Have you ever seen someone in your country wearing a shirt from a soccer team in

Europe, such as Manchester United or F.C. Barcelona? Or have you ever watched

Mexico’s National Soccer Team play a friendly game against a far away country, like

Sweden or Angola? These are examples of globalization in sports. For many sports, being

the best team in a country is no longer the greatest victory. As globalization spreads, so

does the chance to be the best in the world.

A sport like soccer, for example, began in England. When English people went to

foreign places they brought many parts of their culture with them, and that included sports.

The game spread across Europe and to many more distant countries. Now soccer is played

throughout the world.

Television and the internet make is possible for Latin American fans of teams in

England and Spain to follow every game, and keep informed of the latest sports news.

These advances in media have helped to bring the game to the fans no matter where they

live.

Page 12: Guia ingles v

The World Cup competition exists because of globalization. Every four years the

world’s best teams compete for the glory of being the greatest soccer team in the world.

This competition makes perfect sense in our globalized world in which teams can travel

anywhere in the world by plane. We are used to teams competing to be world champions.

In fact, it is difficult for us to imagine a time when teams only competed against nearby

teams.

____ 18. Through globalization teams have a chance to compete against teams from around the world. _____

____ 19. Being the best soccer team in the country is better than being the best in the world.

____ 20. People today are used to teams competing internationally.
