1 Writing an abstract for a research paper

Just as the name suggests, the abstract is the brief of your research. There are two categories of an abstract: descriptive and informative abstract. Your research paper should have an informative abstract. Due to the nature and the purpose of the abstract, it should be 250 words long and should be written in one block paragraph.

Writing the introduction of a research paper requires skill; you have limited space, yet there is so much information to give.

Again, the introduction creates a specific impression on your work, it determines if your instructor reads the entire research paper out of interest or for the sake of assessment

Normally, an introduction should be only one paragraph long. In that paragraph, you are expected to do the following:

Introduce the topic-

Describe and give a background of the research, the theme and the research questions.

Give a summary of the previous researches-

This involves giving a brief literature review to help you place your research into context

Write a thesis statement-

While the topic helps you to state the scope of your study, thesis statement informs the reader what you want him/her to know.

Literature review for a research paper

5

Literature review is a collection of resource materials relevant to a certain research paper assignment. Literature does not involve books only; it also involves other sources such as journals, reports, recorded interviews, and scholarly articles among others, as long as they are relevant to the research. The literature review should be characterized by a summary and a synthesis of the sources selected.

What is the purpose of literature review?

Is there a difference between a literature review and an academic paper?

Besides providing a solid background to your research, a literature review gives credibility to your work. It helps to create a bridge between the present and past researches

While an academic research paper focuses on supporting a thesis and presenting evidence to support the thesis, the function of a literature review is to lay a foundation for a research topic. Compared to the paper that focuses on introducing new knowledge, the review focuses on research done by other researchers
