OBJECTIVES

• Determine what causes hydroelectric power to produce electricity

• Describe how a hydroelectric power plant produces electricity

• List advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric power

Page 3: Hydroelectric power

WHERE DOES HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY COME FROM?

• “Hydro-” means water

• “-electric” means electricity

• Hydroelectric energy is electricity gained from flowing water

Page 4: Hydroelectric power

HOW DOES WATER PRODUCE ELECTRICITY?

• Water is influenced by gravity

• That tendency can be used to turn a turbine

Page 5: Hydroelectric power

HOW HYDRO ELECTRIC WORKS

• Generally the hydro energy plants comprises the generator ,turbine stator generator shaft and turbine blades to generate electricity when the water flows the turbine blades the turbine convert the energy it generators into mechanical form and the generators turn those mechanical energy into electricity , the generator works on principles of magnetic , it means that when you move a magnetic past a conductor it cause the electric flow

HOW TO PRODUCE LARGE AMOUNT OF ELECTRICITY

• Governments construct dams across big rivers so that they can harness the kinetic energy release when this water passed through a turbine they are able to produce the electricity in a large scale

HYDROELECTRIC DAMS

• Three Gorges Dam in China is the largest hydroelectric plant in the world

Page 10: Hydroelectric power

HYDROELECTRICITY FROM THE TIDES

• Ocean Tides can produce hydroelectricity

• Uses the motion and speed of the waves to power a turbine

Page 11: Hydroelectric power

ADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• Hydroelectric Power Stations can last for many decades

• Hydroelectric energy does not pollute the atmosphere

• Hydroelectric Dams can be used for other purposes

Page 12: Hydroelectric power

DISADVANTAGES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER

• Dams are expensive to build and take a long time to repay the investment

• If a dam is not built correctly, the dam could break causing serious flooding and damage downriver

• Large dams can cause geological problems
