Description:• The model is called “Improvised Urinary System

Model”. It is made from recycled plastic bottles, rubber tubes and motorcycle fuel filter. This model aims to help teachers teach the pupils the process of investigating and explaining natural phenomena. It will aid the teacher to show the function of the kidney being the main organ of the urinary system thus, the learning objectives herein aim to provide the learners an opportunity to develop concepts and acquire the manipulative, creative and high-order thinking skills.

• This material can be used by both the teacher and the pupils in grade five.

Duration:

• The time allotted to use this model is

40-60 minutes or depending on the learning capability of the pupils.

Objectives:

After using this material,

the pupils should be able to:

a. identify the urinary system and its major parts

b. describe how urine is formed and eliminated from the body

c. explain the main function of the kidney

Preparation:

• Prerequisites:

• 500 ml water• 2-5 pinches of powdered black pepper• 5 drops of Betadine solution or soy sauce

Instructions/Procedures:

Before the class starts:

• Have the model and other materials ready.• Mix the powdered pepper, 5 drops of

Betadine or soy sauce in a 500 ml water in a bottle. (Make sure that the peppers are still visible after adding the Betadine or soy sauce. )

• Shake well. This is your blood mixture.

During the activity:

• Show to the class the blood mixture that you have prepared and have them identify the its components. Explain to the class what the black pepper represents.

• Transfer the mixture into one of the bottles of the model labeled “1”.

• Hold the bottle “1” upright and gently squeeze until the mixture reaches the filter. Keep on squeezing until the water passes through the filter and flows to the other bottles labeled “2” and “3”.

Teaching Hints

• After the activity, the teacher has the option to let the pupils label every bottle/part of the model for them to familiarize the parts and functions of the urinary system.

e.g. bottle “1” – renal artery

• Conduct debriefing. You may

use the following questions/task:• 1. Tell me about your observation on the

activity.• 2. What do you think does the bottle “1”

represent? The bottle “2” and “3”. The filter? The tube from the filter to the bottle “2”?

• 3. If the powdered peppers are the “nitrogenous wastes”, can you describe their status after going through with that activity and where do you think they will go after that?

• 4. What do you think will happen to the filter if you add more powdered pepper in your mixture? Why?

• 5. What generalization or conclusion can you make from the activity?
