Digital Universe in 2020

• The digital universe will grow to 40,000 exabytes or 40 trillion gigabytes (more than 5,200 gigabytes for every man, woman, and child)

• Nearly 40% of that information will be touched by cloud computing providers (stored in the cloud at some point between creation and disposition)

• The proportion of data requiring protection will grow faster than the digital universe itself from less than 33% to more than 40% in 2020.

• As much a 33% of the digital universe will contain information that might be valuable if analyzed, compared with 25% today.

Not in the paper… but in case you’re wondering

1. SLIS is planning for the addition of several new courses in digital curation and developing guidance for MLIS students in the form of a Digital Curation career pathway.

2. The new courses will also be available to students pursuing a Post-Master’s Certificate in DARM and to those pursuing a master’s degree in Archives and Records Administration (MARA).

3. SLIS is exploring the development of a SLIS Virtual Digital Technologies lab.
