2. THE DESIGN CYCLE 3. THE DESIGN CYCLE 4. Inquiring and AnalyzingDevelopingIdeasEvaluatingCreating the Solution 5. 1. INQUIRING AND ANALYZINGA. Explain and justify the needB. Identify and prioritize researchC. Analyze a range of existing productsD. Summarize the analysis of the research 6. INQUIRING AND ANALYZINGConsider possibilities and ideas. Exploreresources (online documents, books, magazines, materials and ingredients).Questions to ask: Do I have thematerials that I need? Do I haveenough time? 7. INQUIRING AND ANALYZINGEXAMPLE: MAKING BROWNIES Research online recipes atfoodnetwork.com to find a list of highlyrated recipes. What supplies will you need to make thebrownies? 8. 2. DEVELOPING IDEASA. Develop a design specificationB. Develop a range of design ideasC. Present and justify the final chosen designD. Develop planning drawings/diagrams 9. DEVELOPING IDEASQuestions to ask:What should the final product look like? What are the dimensions?Color?Format? 10. DEVELOPING IDEASEXAMPLE: BROWNIESWhat do you want the brownies to look like? How do you want the brownies to taste?Soft or stiff?Icing or no icing? 11. 3. CREATING THE SOLUTIONA. Construct a logical planB. Demonstrate technical skillsC. Follow the plan to make the solutionD. Justify changes made to the design 12. CREATING THE SOLUTIONThis is where you put your plan toaction. Most of your work will probably bedone here. 13. CREATING THE SOLUTIONExample: BrowniesSet the oven temperature.Mix the batter.Bake. 14. 4. EVALUATINGA. Design testing methodsB. Evaluate the success of the solutionC. Explain how the solution could beimprovedD. Explain the impact of the solution 15. EVALUATINGExample: BrowniesHow did they look?Taste?Burnt or just right? 16. DESIGN CYCLEThese 4 phases do not always follow thispattern. Sometimes we must start over.Sometimes we must jump ahead. The Design Cycle is fluid. Its about thejourney, not just the final product. 17. Inquiring and AnalyzingDevelopingIdeasEvaluatingCreating the Solution 18. DESIGN EXAMPLE: DUCT TAPE BRIDGEExplanation: MythBusters Jamie Hyneman andAdam Savage required not one but two episodes to test the full range of duct tape'sproperties. The duo dared to take the tape'sstrength to new heights by building a 100-foot-long(30.5-meter-long) bridge out of duct tape.Make note of when Jamie and Adam use any of the 4 design cyclesteps during their creation process! 19. HOW DID THE MYTHBUSTERS USE EACH OFTHE 4 DESIGN CYCLE CATEGORIES? 23. And now for 24. Build the Tallest Freestanding Structure: The winning team is theone that has the tallest structure measured from the table topsurface to the top of the marshmallow. That means the structurecannot be suspended from a higher structure, like a chair, ceiling orchandelier. The Entire Marshmallow Must be on Top: The entiremarshmallow needs to be on the top of the structure. Cutting oreating part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team.Use as Much or as Little of the Kit: The team can use as many oras few of the 20 spaghetti sticks, as much or as little of the string ortape. The team cannot use the paper bag as part of their structure.Break up the Spaghetti, String or Tape: Teams are free to breakthe spaghetti, cut up the tape and string to create new structures. The Challenge Lasts 18 minutes: Teams cannot hold on to thestructure when the time runs out. Those touching or supportingthe structure at the end of the exercise will be disqualified.Does everyone understands the Rules? Any questions? 25. Plan yourdesignindependently. 26. Brainstormwith design notesand sketches. 27. YouTube:Tom Wujec:Build a TowerBuild a Team 28. Exit Ticket: Write a reflection on how the Design Cycleworked for your group. In 4 complete sentences, tell me what your group did foreach of the steps of the REFLECTIONdesign cycle Inquiring and Analyzing How did you decide what the problem was? What solution were yousolving? Developing Ideas How did you decide what to do to solve the problem? Creating the Solution How did you figure out how to put your plan into action? Evaluating How did you decide if your plan was a success or a failure?
