Education in Germany…

in general, pupils graduate from high-school

… after 9-10 years (basic graduation level)

… after 10 years (medium grad. level, „O-levels“)

… after 12 years (Higher Education qualification level, „Abitur,“ „A-levels“)

16 more or less similar systems: Education is under the legislation of the 16 federal states (Länder)

after school:

below higher education level:• a good dual education system for on-the-job training and apprenticeships

(e.g. 4 days training, 1 day vocational school)

higher education level:• majority of study capacity at publicly funded universities• no tuition fees (introduced and abolished in 5-6 states)• financial support (BAFÖG) for students with moderate means

still: social background of parents is the strongest predictor of educationlevel in Germany

University and Drexel University• Merged into the ‚Gang of Five‘ in 2001• Since 2003 the number of members expanded rapidly• Name changed into iSchools• An iCaucus (mainly the first members) established• Today 55 institutions worldwide:
