LIQUID DROP MODEL

THE LIQUID DROP MODEL WAS FIRST PROPOSED BY GEORGE GAMOW

THE LIQUID DROP MODEL WAS DEVELPPED BY NIELS BOHE AND JOHN ARCHIBOLD IN 1937

“ A LIQUID DROP MODEL IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS TREATS THE NUCLEUS AS A DROP OF INCOMPRESSABLE NUCLEAR FLUID”

• THE FLUID IS MADE OF NUCLEONS (PROTONS AND NEUTRONS ) , WHICH ARE HELD TOGETHER BY THE STOOMG NUCLEAR FORCE. OBVIOUSLY ,THE NUCLEUS CANNOT BE ASSUMED LIKE THE CRYSTALLINE ARRAY OF NUCLEONS.

• The reason is that in that case the vibration of nuclons on either side of their mean position will be too strong that the nucleus will not remain stable.

Hence it is assumed that“Each nucleon inside the nucleus moves just like

the motion of a molecule in liquid”

• The nucleons inside the nucleus are bound with the nuclear forces just as the molecules in a liquid are bound with the inter molecular forces.(which are conesive forces)

when a heavy nucleus like U 235

Is excied throught the capture of a thermal neutron , surface oscillation are Set up in the liquid droup which distart it from its original shape

The coulomb energy attempts to deform the drop even more

Thank you all……`!!!!!`….!!!!!
