Curtin University’s vision

Dr Gill was the Water Corporation’s inaugural CEO from 1996 until he retired in December 2008. Dr Gill graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with First Class Honours from The University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1968 and a PhD from Cambridge University in 1972.

His career commenced with the WA Main Roads Department in 1973. From 1988 to 1995 Dr Gill was WA’s Commissioner of Railways.In 2006, Dr Gill was named the Australian Civil Engineer of the Year. He was awarded the Grand Award of the International Water Association in 2008.

Teaching and learning• Curtin is committed to innovation and excellence in teaching and research, for the benefit of our students and the wider community.

• At the 2010 Australian Awards for University Teaching , Curtin received four awards, more than any other university in Western Australia.

• eValuate, online system for gathering and reporting student feedback was available to teachers and students. Results show students increasingly satisfied with quality of teaching and learning experiences

• iPortfolio – developed at Curtin, an online space for staff, students and soon alumni to manage their professional portfolios from the beginning of their higher education throughout their careers.

• Curtin’s reputation for world-class research confirmed when, for the second consecutive year, listed in the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU, or Shanghai Jiao Tong).

• A number of prestigious awards presented to Curtin researchers in 2010significant progress was made in Curtin’s four areas of research focus: minerals and energy, sustainability, health, and ICT and emerging technologies.

Square Kilometre Array (SKA)

Curtin is one of the leading institutes supporting Australia's bid to host the Square Kilometre Array. The SKA will be the biggest radio telescope ever built, with a collecting area two orders of magnitude larger than the current technology.

Resources and Chemistry Precinct

In 2009 Curtin opened the Resources and Chemistry Precinct. The precinct represents a $116 million investment primarily funded by Curtin, with contributions from BHP Billiton and the Australian Federal Government.

Curtin Engineering Pavilion

In 2010 stage one of the Curtin Engineering Pavilion was completed and will be officially opened by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in April 2011. The pavilion is the first university building in Australia to be registered for a Green Building Council of Australia five-star Greenstar rating. Stage two is expected to be completed by early 2012.

Make Tomorrow Better campaign

Launched in late 2010 the Make Tomorrow Better positioning campaign marks a shift, along with the name change to Curtin University, to show the opportunities and experiences provided by Curtin to improve the global future.

The campaign featured a number of video profiles of current students, staff, researchers and alumni and how they are making tomorrow better.
