How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Film - Research

I researched the main conventions of thriller films and the main narrative ideas in which the most popular thrillers have. This helped to think of our own ideas with using these as starting points.

What we wanted to create with our film was keeping the audience engaged and making them feel suspense as to what is going to happen.

Film - Narrative We wanted to create a film that would create

many questions within the audiences mind to begin with which would all be answered with a climatic ending. To do this our idea was to portray the theme of love and hate through a woman who goes out of her mind and kills her Ex and his new bride. We also thought about the time period of our film as we wanted to create an old fashioned film rather than something modern as we thought it would be different and interesting for the audience.

Film - Colour We used both black & white and colour when editing our film. This

was because we felt like it would be interesting and different for the audience, it also meant that during the black and white scenes there wouldn’t be colour distracting from what was going on in the film.

Our main reason for using black and white was to link to the narrative idea of the film being set in the 1900s and creating an old fashioned look.

Film - Sound The only sound in our film was one song running

throughout. We decided on this song as it had a soft start which picked up slowly and then had a climatic part which then softly died out. This fit perfectly with our film. It also linked well to the thriller genre of our film as it was heart racing music which would keep the audience feeling tense.

However if I could change anything I would add different music over the coloured flashback scenes, this is something that we were going to do however we couldn’t make them flow well together therefore we got rid of the other music completely.

Poster – Text/Font The title I decided to put in a calligraphy font this is

because it has connotations of an old style which then links to the time out film was set. I also chose calligraphy because the style is quite ‘fancy’ which then links to the image on the poster as that is the style of the wedding dress (also in the film).

The font I used on the bottom half of the poster was the same as used on other thriller posters, this was because it would then fit well with the film as it was a poster to promote the film rather than just being a regular poster.

If I could change anything I would make it so the text stands out better as some of the writing is slightly hidden due to the background image.

Poster & Double page spread - Colours The main colours I used in my poster and double page spread were Red,

White and Black White - to represent what a wedding should be like, white dress and pure,

however the irony is that that isn’t what the wedding was like at all. Red – to represent the blood in the film. The dress is covered in it, and

also in the final church scene all 3 characters are covered in it. The red also represented the love which was in our film. The main antagonist had love for the male character which was obvious during the flash back love scenes, however she is filled with too much jealousy for his new bride that hatred over comes.

Black – to represent the hatred that the antagonist is filled with. Black also has connotations with death which is present at the end of our film and also mystery. Mystery is another key theme in our film, this is due to all of the questions that the audience have in their minds whilst watching the film which are then revealed at the end.

Poster & Double page spread - Images The images from both worked well along with the film as they

were all taken whilst filming different scenes. The double page spread main idea was a behind the scenes

look at the film, therefore the images used fit perfectly. If I could change anything I would have taken more photos whilst filming as some of the photos that I have used are screenshots from the film as I ran out of photographs to use.

The images for the poster were both taken during the final scene – the church scene. They were posed unlike the double page spread photos however they still link well to the film.

What worked well... Film - The editing I felt was something that

was strong in our film. This is due to the backwards feature. The part that I felt worked the best were when the antagonist smudges her lipstick in the woods scene, and when she lights the candle in the bedroom scene.

Poster – The images I felt worked well as they were blended gradually together so that it looked like the top image of the woman holding the knife was over the 2 dead people in the bottom image which then creates an idea of what’s to come for the audience.

Double Page Spread – The layout was something that I felt was strong in this. This was because I had the images spread out but with one main image and also different pieces of text set out across the page rather than just one block of text because that doesn’t look interesting to the audience. I also feel that the idea behind the double page spread of ‘behind the scenes’ fit well as it promotes the film as well as being informative.

What I would change...

In the film during the running scenes where the antagonist is going from the house to the woods I would make these clips shorter as something they go on for too long and look slightly novelty.

I would also make the church scene go on for longer, this is because it is the main part of the film as it where the plot is revealed to the audience and I feel that it ends slightly too quickly.
