GENRE: RNB There are no magazines that specifically based on RnB music. There's always a content of Hip Hop included in the magazines such Vibe etc. This shows that there's a gap in the market. Even though having a gaps not good, there is also an advantage, because it could attract more people, because there's more variety. I have picked the genre RnB, because I enjoy that type of music I always listen to it, so I think I will find it good to research about.

Research on Vibe

History of Vibe Vibe was established in

1993 by producer and music mogul Quincy Jones with help from hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons. It was issued monthly. However it shut down on June 30 2009 due to the recession.

Readership of vibe

Readership of Vibe Its readership grew broader as Hip Hop

became pop music. 2007 Vibe had a circulation of about 800,000.

However Vibe shut down due to decreasing readership, magazines are competing with the internet now, so people are less likely to buy magazines as they weren’t before.

Target audience of Vibe Vibes target audience is people who

enjoy hip hop and RnB. It is aimed at male and females, because the colours on the covers are unisex and the artist the show appeals to both genders. I would say the target audience would be from teenagers upwards, whoever likes this genre of music. Some people may think its targeted to black people, but I think its for any race that enjoys this genre.

Analysing magazines

I have noticed through all the magazines that there all have the artists head either in front or below the title, this is seen as professional. Also the title is just one solid colour I believe this affect makes the title stand out, because of the artists head. Also there is only one person on the cover, there are different types of shots i.e. long shots, mid shots, this is so that

Target audience At first when the magazine started out the

target audience was for black teenagers in America at that time, because there was a magazine before them called Tiger Beat that showed white American and Hispanic celebrities, Right On! noticed a gap in the market about no information about black celebrities. Now I think the target audience is still for teenagers, but it does not matter what race or genre type, hip hop R&B and also teen pop is included, by seeing the names of the artist at the front.

How does front cover appeal to audience The front cover appeals to the target

audience because it has a balance of colours that don't make it look too masculine or feminine, also it shows pictures of the different artists that do certain types of music also it showed names of the artist at the front.

Questionnaire findings

I did a questionnaire about my magazine and I found out that 80% of males said that they would rather have an attractive female on the cover, instead of a male, also 60% of female also said they would rather have an attractive male on the front, this shows that sex appeal is an important aspect in selling magazines.

I also found that most people didn’t like a lot of text on the magazine as they felt it would ruin the central image, unless the text was fun and exicting.
