MESSY ROOM Zhen Choo Huang & Chittikan Rujiart

MESSY ROOM BY SHEL SILVERSTEIN

Whosever room this is should be ashamed! His underwear is hanging on the lamp. His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp. His workbook is wedged in the window,His sweater’s been thrown on the floor. His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door. His books are all jammed in the closet,His vest has been left in the hall.A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.Whosever room this is should be ashamed!Donald or Robert or Willie or–Huh? You say it’s mine? Oh, dear,I knew it looked familiar!

Synopsis

A man come home from work. Entering his bedroom, complaining and criticising how the room is messy.

The ending of the poem is very ironic, after we see the narrator reprimanding the messy inhabitant; we learn that he is the owner himself.

*Not showing the face of the character throughout the film at the end showing the reflection of his face.

Mood board

For this short film there is a great amount of props needed to emphasis the messiness of the room. These mood board shows a variety of props that will be needed and also it gives us an idea of what we want the mise-en-scene to look like.

In the first mood board you can see the great amount of books and how dirty the room will look like. There are books everywhere and no room to stand around. The actual setting won’t be to this extreme however you can understand what we are trying to portray in the scene.

In the second mood board you can see number of props that will be need. The props used will represent the characters life style and just his personality too.

Storyboard 1

Messy room is a poem about a man and his messy room. We will be following the poem very closely so there will be a lot of scenes with close up of the props in his room, such as sweaters and socks on the floor.

Throughout this short film there will be no sound until the very end, there will only be diegetic sound. The short film starts off with a close up shot of the man’s feet walking into his room. At first we don’t see what his room actually looks like nor do we see the character’s face. He goes around his room to find stuff that he would needs for university. Whiles doing that we see the amount of mess in his room by having varies close up of different props.

Storyboard 2

Throughout the film there will be a lot of cutting shots and so that in a short amount of time we see a lot of things we don’t normally see jammed in together.

We have a tracking shot of his book shelve. You can see books jammed in different places and not very organized at all. At one point there will be a shot of his hallway. Then a low angle tracking shot of a piece of clothing on the floor. We see the character passing by and just rush about the house. From this we can see how busy his life is and that time is a big thing in his life.

Storyboard 3

At the very end of the film we see a long shot of the whole room. The audience hasn’t seen the room all in one shot yet, the bigger picture. From this the audience can see all in one shot the mess in his room. This pause for a few seconds and the character walks back in but we still don’t see what he looks like.

The short film ends will the camera panning up and to a mirror. In the mirror we finally see a reflection of what the character looks like. And it fades out and the credits comes on and a fast pace song comes on. We will end the short film with a fast pace song because its a representation of the character’s busy life.
