SA MUSEUM FACTS Genesis originated in London on 29 August 1834 Institute museum functioning in 1856 Institute building completed by 1861 George Waterhouse as first curator in 1859 Autonomy of the Museum from the Institute(Library & Art Gallery) in 1939 Museum renamed and fully functional as theSouth Australian Museum in 1940 6. The South Australian Museum is a custodian for the Statescultural and natural heritage. The specialised data generated bycollection managers, curators and scientists over the last 150 yearsand its interpretation are made available to the internationalcommunity through publication, promotion, education andexhibitions. THE PROJECT:PHOTOGRAPHIC AUDIT 8. PHOTOGRAPHIC AUDIT The project is to organise and catalogueexisting images for the marketing anddesign departments To make decisions about which imagesshould and should not be used To find gaps within the collection 9. AIMS To create a more efficient way of accessingimages To decide which images are suitable formarketing and promotion To remove images which are not suitable formarketing and promotion To discover possible gaps within the photographiccollection To make staff aware of what is missing and whatneeds to be actioned 10. LEARNING ABOUT RESOLUTION In undertaking a project of this nature it isimportant to understand basic photographicprinciples This is an important as the images beingaudited are to be used for promotional andmarketing purposes 11. ABOUT IMAGE QUALITY RESOLUTION: A term used to describe thecapabilities of digital image devices (cameras,scanners, printers etc.) PIXELS: Picture Element; The building blocks ofdigital imagery PPI: Pixels Per Inch; a technical termdescribing the size of the image 12. IMAGE QUALITY 300ppi = High Quality Image 150ppi = Medium Quality; image looses some sharpness and detail 75ppi = Low Quality; Image is degraded 13. THE INTERNSHIP Getting to know thecollection Organising an electronicfiling system Sorting through electronicimages Sorting through images on(pacific cultures gallery)compact disc Making decisions on what iskept Making staff aware of issues Creating a final report onwhat I have done (main entrance of museum) 14. POSITIVES Successful organisation and development ofan electronic filing system Successfully making creative decisionsregarding which images are to be kept Successfully participating actively in aprofessional working environment 15. NEGATIVES A greater knowledge of specifics within thecollections would be useful during the sorting ofimages A greater knowledge of past events and functionswould have benefited decisions about archivalimages The possibility that the organisation of imageswill not be maintained once the internship hasceased 16. CREATIVE DECISION MAKING The ability to confidently make decisions in aprofessional workplace and take responsibilityfor outcomes An important skill for any professional in themuseum industry A skill that is constantly being developed 17. OTHER SKILLS Organisational skills developing and harnessingthe skill to create efficient ways to complete theproject (electronic filing system, sorting ofimages, project management plan etc.) Independent working The participation in aproject that is self-directed and required a lot ofwork alone (sorting images on the computer) 18. CONCLUSIONSMy time with the SouthAustralian Museum hasbeen very successful andhas provided me withnew and developing skillsthat will benefit me inmy professional ventures(Allosaurus, main entrance) 19.
