I will be analyzing the following videos ;

• Katy Perry’s “ Hot n Cold”• Lady Gaga “Poker Face”

In these video I will discuss about ; • Camera Angles and Shots• Editing• Mis-en-scene

Music Video analysis Katy Perry ‘”Hot n Cold” Video analysis.

Camera Angles and Shots.

• In this video there are a lot of over the shoulder shots used which makes the story professional and easy to convey.

• Mid shot are also used in this video as it gives an idea that what is going on in the video. It’s a way of to convey the emotions of the characters.

• The first shot is an establishing long shot which automatically sets the scene and shows us what is going on and sets a story in our minds.

• Close ups and extreme close ups are used during the opening which tells us about the expressions of the character

• In this video low shot is used which makes us feel as that we’re a part of the video and the over the shoulder shots gives us the direct impression of us looking over their shoulders.



There are other establishing shots - a long shot when the music begins to play, this show us a change in emotion and location . She is no more happy in here and we can see that she's angry as in the first scene we could see that she was happy and all here emotions were visible.


Camera and Angle Shots

In these shots the music starts and over the shoulder shots and close ups are used to show the lip syncing .



Katy Perry is making direct eye contact with the camera and lip syncing showing her confidence through mid shots and long shots. She is also positioned in the centre of the frame showing her control.

These shots are also very different from the previous ones as she was represented as a traditional woman in the opening of the music video where she was portrayed as being sweet and innocent.



There are a lot of extreme close ups in this video just displaying parts of her body which has introduced a new concept of sexuality into the music video.

There are high shots used which show how important Katy Perry is in the crowd and changes he atmosphere of the crowd too.



Arial shots are used which show how she is confronting the problem and being surrounded by women suggests that she is winning.

There are many close up shots of the artist used as they want to promote her and want people to watch the music video for her.

Low angle shots are used mostly of just the feet to highlight the dancers which is commonly found in pop music videos.


Editing

In the opening of the music video there is very less editing as there is no music in the beginning. However in the next scene when music is present there is a lot of editing to match the beats of the music. Fast editing is used which also adds to the dance atmosphere. This is used for when there is dancing.

The colours in the video show the different sides of Katy Perry’s personality. The white during the wedding highlights her innocence whereas the reds emphasis a dangerous quality and seductiveness. There is also a hip hop scene with bright colours this could indicate the fun and sassy side to her.


The clothes that Katy Perry is wearing varies from innocent and decent clothes to reflect the wedding, seductive at the night club, fun during the hip hop scene and sexy to show the different styles of Katy Perry.

There are many props used that emphasis the fun. For example the Zebra, bikes and more.

Lightning

Lighting is bright during the wedding scenes as they are focusing on the storyline but then changes to bright red lights that co inside with the tempo of the music. This is common with pop songs, creating a dancing atmosphere. The red represents her anger at the man.

• The camera zooms in and out in a fast pace which draws the audiences attention to her seductive movements.

• Tracking shot is used which follows Lady Gaga into the poker game which establishes the scene.


• Wide shots are used to show the location which tells us that Lady Gaga wants to create an image of being luxurious and powerful.

• This shot is also effective as Lady Gaga is to the right of the frame which effectively shows the luxury of the location and also make her seem powerful as the viewers eye draws immediately to her.

Camera Angles and shots

Long shots are used to highlight Lady Gaga’ssexual appeal .Many close ups are used to promote the artist as this was one of the first music videos she had produced. Close-ups are also used to convey the lip syncing. It is also a way to enhance her sex appeal which attracts her target audience.

Editing and Special Effects

In this video the editing is fast when there is music and when she is emerging from the swimming pool. This displays the image of Lady Gaga and her music which is the weirdness and instability.

A special effect used multiple times in this music video. A slip screen is added to the distorted atmosphere created by the music.

MIS-EN-SCENE

• A strong and powerful breed of dog is used which symbolise her power and influence.

• The colours used vary the bright blue of her costume follows the convention of a pop song and the blacks and red suggest a sexual and dangerous aspect.

• The clothes that Lady Gaga wears are very tight and show a lot of skin which adds to the sex appeal.

MIS-EN-SCENEThe location is very luxurious which goes with the lifestyle she is trying to create. It also strengthens her message that she is dominant and powerful.

The masks and mirrors used highlight her poker face as her face and true emotions are hidden behind the mask , however, she peals it away from her face which could also mean that it is easy to change and hide her emotions if she wants. Therefore meaning that she had the power. The glasses too conceal a part of her face which are the eyes which reveal peoples emotions such as when they are lying.

The dancers are also commonly found in Pop songs.

The use of Lady Gaga wearing only a bra and pants could suggest two ideas these are that it increases the sexual appeal which suits the target audience or it could suggest that she uses her poker face through her seductiveness.
