1. Speak about something you have earned the right to talk about through

• Tell us what life has taught you• Look for topics in your background• Early years and upbringing (Topics that deal with the

family, childhood memories, schooldays, invariably get attention, because most of us are interested in the environment in which they were reared)

• Hobbies & Recreation

Cont…

• Special areas of knowledge• Unusual experience• Beliefs and Conviction (if you have devoted many hours to

the study of the issues of importance, you have earned the right to talk about them)

2. Be sure you are excited about your subject

• Not all the topic that you and I have earned the right to talk about make us excited

• I certainly am qualified to talk about washing dishes but somehow or other I can’t get excited about this topic

Cont…• Recently, I came across some notes I had written in 1926

after I had visited the 17th session of the League of Nation in Geneva, Switzerland. “After three or four lifeless speakers read their manuscripts, Sir George Foster of Canada took the floor. With immense satisfaction. I noted that he had no papers or notes of any kind. He gestured almost constantly. His heart was in what he was saying.

• Principles I have been advocating in my teaching were beautifully illustrated in that talk

3. Be Eager to Share Your Talk With Your Listeners

• There are 3 factors in every speaking situation:i. The Speakerii. The Speech/the messageiii. The audienceThe speech can only be successful if the speaker relates his talk to a living audience

Page 15: My Favorite Book by Aabid Zafar

Cont…

• The speaker must make his listeners feel that what he has to say is important to them

• He must not only be excited about his topic but he must be eager to transfer this excitement to his listeners

Page 16: My Favorite Book by Aabid Zafar

The Effective Speaker earnestly desires his listeners to feel…

• What he feels to agree with his point of view• To do what he thinks is right for hem to do• To enjoy and relive his experience with him

Page 17: My Favorite Book by Aabid Zafar

Overall…

• A good speaker must be audience-centered and not self-centered

• He must know that the success or failure of his talk is not for him to decide—it will be decided in the minds and hearts of his hearers
